No. If they take it without a title all they can do is part it out.

A buddy of mine had a similar experience on a minivan when we were in the military. There was this minivan that had been abandaned in our barracks parking. It had been there for at least 2 years and who knows how long before that. He was a new daddy and pretty good with his hands, so he was wanting to take the vn and refurbish it for his family. We contacted everyone that we could think of that might have knowledge of the owner of the van. We learned that the original owner got shipped to Korea for a year and he thought that he was goig to return back to our base once his tour was over. However, he learned that he had been assigned to another post. And oddly enough, the original owner of the minivan was a single male who honestly had no need for a minivan.. So as the story goes he just had all his belongings shipped to his new duty station, but the van would start, after all it had been a year...So he checked prices to have it shipped to his next duty station, but they wanted more to do that than the van was worth.. So my friend had to go to the DMV and they said that they had to send out a public notice, whatever that means, to all of the known registared users of the va, telling them of the situation. If none came back with a reason not to relinquish the title, then the DMV would except and refile for a lost title under my buddies name.. I would have to assume that the same thing would happen in your case. The only difference might be that you might file for a salvaged title instead.. I am sure that it depends on your state as well.

Of course NOT!
The title is a certificate of ownership. Without it how would junk yard really know this car is yours to junk? And for this exact reason (buying and selling to "wash" the title) is this practice not allowed. Or car thieves would be washing their titles through junk yard all day long.
If the car is your (properly) just contact the DMV for replacement title. If not, then you have no reason (no business) junking the car.
You may think it is some how unfair, but remember in the long run it also prevents your car, your father's car, your sister's car from being stolen and being resold (with washed titles).

You will have to wright down the vin number - located in the dash near the drivers side.
Take that to the DMV, and tell them you are filing for an abandoned vehicle title.
It takes about 30 days to recieve in the mail.
As long as the car has been there for 90 days you can file for it.
