We will be flying into DC next month and have decided that renting a car might not be a good idea. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can sightsee DC with a 6 month old baby? Also, will taxis allow me to ride with a baby on my lap(Is this even legal)? thanks.

It is illegal to travel in a motor vehicle with your baby in your lap at that age. You must bring a car seat if you plan to use taxis.

Metro is fairly baby and stroller friendly. You can ride on a metro train or bus with your child on your lap or in a stroller. While I agree with the poster who suggested this might be difficult at rush hour, I will also point out that August is light rush-hour wise, and that it will be possible, if you are patient.

When my kids were small we went all over DC sightseeing with a fold up stroller. Most of DC is very handicapped accessible, and therefore a stroller works well. Metro stations have elevators and escalators - I'd be careful on the latter, but sometimes the elevators break down. Either carrying or pushing a 6 month old would work well.

Be careful of the sun in the summer. You can easily walk the monuments with an infant, but should make sure they are protected against UV rays.

Fortunately most of the sights in DC are close together and metro accessible.

If you want to visit Georgetown, take the Connector bus from Union Station or along K street. That is the only area not easily accessible via metro.

You may also consider Tourmobile - a hop on hop off bus tour of the most popular sites. Easy to get on with a stroller, and good transport.

Try to stay somewhere downtown, if that is an option - less travel to do.

Metro is probably your cheapest and best bet. But with a 6 month old and a stroller try to avoid rush hour times. Trains are very busy and space can be tight. You can get to just about any DC attraction via metro. Below is a link to the METRO website for trains and buses. Have Fun on your visit!

I doubt that you could do a cab with a baby on your lap.
Metro is certainly your best bet. For the baby, can you get one of those backpack-styled carriers?
As previous person said - avoid rush hour!
