No visitors are allowed in her room and family is waiting what would be appropriate to put in the basket?
Or are there other suggestions? I will be going to sit with them for a while today.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I am going to give this to the family for them while they are waiting. To help them with the time.

Waiting is awful, and distractions are what they might most appreciate.
Find several magazines of general interest, or tailored to their interests if you know them. Add a humor book unrelated to hospitals. (The ones that are somehow are anything but funny when you're waiting in a hospital.) A handheld game or puzzle (Rubik's cube?). Today's newspaper. A spiral notebook and a pen. Gum. Hard candies (Lifesavers, JellyBellies). A book of crossword puzzles, mazes, mental puzzles, etc. and a couple of pencils. A box of crackers. Some fruit that keeps at room temperature (apples, grapes). Home-made cookies, wrapped to preserve freshness.

Flowers are usually nice.
If there are kids, you could put in crayons and coloring books. And perhaps other books for the grown-ups.
My mother has a few times made Brunswick Stew in the crock-pot for families with people in the ICU. I don't know what the hospital rules are about food, though. If food is allowed, you can add a can of nuts and some bottles of drink.
I know that's not much, but I hope it's enough to make waiting easier.
Good luck.

Don't take flowers unless they are silk. Because flowers mold and get bugs after a few days. That could make your friend sicker. I would suggest NOT getting anything yet. Wait until he is in a normal bed and bored. Then get him puzzle books, music, books on CD, anything that can help with boredom. If you feel inclined to bring him something now, then a card should suffice until you can get him something that is of use.

Were I in your position, and finances allowed, I would consider including some of the following comfort/entertainment type items for family and/or patient:
Box of protein type/meal replacement bars
2-3 magazines on various topics
A book of suduko or similar puzzles
A bag of hard candies
A travel-sizedcheckers or chess or other smaller-sized game
A notepad and a few pens
A few packets of SOFT kleenexes (the ones in hospitals are akin to sandpaper)
A couple of "personal care" type items for family members who don't want to leave the hospital (e.g., toothbrush, toothpaste)
Be sure to include a heartfelt card.
I will pray for you, your friend, and his/her family.
Best of luck,
~M~
