A few of the answerers here seem to think that the asker is a Christian. I seriously doubt that he/she is. It is a member of another religion that would ask such a question with such a slant: superiority, intelligence, evolution -- yep, their usual themes.

we are NOT MUCH more superior... just a little more
We have different abilities then other animals. But there are other animals JUST as intelligent .. if not more then us. The 2 examples being dolphins and some larger species of birds.
intelligence in humans and other animals is measured by the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend, learn quickly, and learn from experience. In which dolphins .. birds and some primates are VERY capable in doing. They are even able to do some simple math.. and It is thought that all 3 have some form on complex thinking .. meaning they think about thinking. This is 1 major ability that separates us from other animals.
As for the ability to communicate ..dolphins and birds DO have a complex language. I'm sure some primates do too.. but i cant speak of them since i dont know much about them.
We humans are capable of speaking b/c of how our voice boxs have formed. We are capable of making more sounds then any other animal. Many animals are capable of making up to 8 different sounds. Combining these sounds together with one another they are capable of making new sounds which forms their commands.. their language. Humans are capable of making 30 different sounds.. and combining those in different order would make our complex language. This is one of the huge advantages we have over other animals. We have not always been able to speak though.. or atleast with the languages we know today. Our voice box have only had this capablity in the last 60,000 or so years.
Have you ever known someone to have a large parrot as a pet ? They are unbelievable ! Its like keeping a 2 year old child in a cage. The Amazon Bluefont parrot is capable of memorizing up to 5,000 different sounds or words in their life span and actually understanding the meaning to nearly half of them !
------------------------------------------
and to answer your question as a whole.. Its b/c we evolved.
There is NOTHING SO special about us. We are, just as them, in the food chain. All creatures balance the ecosystem. Though you may not know it .. they have a huge influence in our lives. For example.. imagine if all owls.. small birds.. spiders and lizards went extinct. We would have a huge mosquito problem.. That means billions of mosquitoes would lose their predator, and those mosquitoes can carry diseases to people like malaria, West Nile virus, and yellow fever. All three of those diseases are killers.
I do understand why you wonder *how come we're not swinging from branches and pissing everywhere* .. but you have to think past the bible .. *IF* that is all you were taugh growing up. Evolution doesn't need to answer why we are like the way we are.. it just IS. Theres no meaning behind it.
Depending on how strict your beliefs are through the bible.. you dont have to believe abiogenesis or evolution .. but you could at least understand it. As I would expect any atheist to have read the bible before speaking.

Is that the best you can do? Really, think just a little bit.
Who says we are "much more superior"?
How are we "much more"? True, we are better at creating things and solving problems than other primates. But how do you know that that is "much more", what is your scale and how is it calibrated? A 100w light bulb is only much brighter than a 50w light bulb if you are measuring along a scale built around the amount of light kicked out by standard light bulbs. If the scale were built around the amount of light kicked out by a star then both the 100w and the 50w light bulb would belong to the class of "very, very dim things" and we would judge the extra light as a tiny increment. Compared to ameobas both humans and chimps are wildly intelligent and the difference between us is marginal. We are only "much more" if you restrict your view to primates.
Why superior? True we are better at problem solving, but we are pretty bad at swingng through trees eating bananas and urinating. Why is what we do better than what they do? We "do" thought and problem solving more than swinging from trees and eating bananas: so we are bound to think that these are important and value them above non-human pursuits.
Why "special"? True we are unique. Then so is that ameoba, the chimp and an antelope. Everything is special : there is special about what makes the human race special: other than in the eyes of the human race. We are special because we are specially us.
Do you really need to use God as an explanation why human beings judge on a human callibrated scale, why human beings particularly value particularly human pursuits and why human beings think that being a human being is great?

Why talk of evolution when you seem to know nothing about it? How come you still confuse apes and humans?
If you read about evolution somewhere, you should have also had read that evolution was proven to be wrong a freaking while ago.
Anyways, why is it fun to know where it all came from? Does it not cause anyone any headaches? And don't you go telling me what the Genesis says. I know what it says. Yeah and I also know what the Big Bang Theory says.
Guess what? They both did not convince me a darn.
It is so nice to just live and breathe and smile and NEVER even bother to think of how it all started and how it came to this level.
I just don't care. That is my answer.

What are you talking about? You christians are the ones with the problem. Why do you care so much that they don't believe in god? Why does it matter to you? Why are you obsessed with it? I don't think atheists are the ones who are losing sleep over it. And how are your brains anymore complex than an atheist's brain? I'm agnostic. You guys rely on god to "save" you and to help you. I rely on myself. I know that I'm the one who's in charge of my life, I make my decisions based on what's best for me. You guys are superior for going to a church and congregating with other hate mongers and read a ficitional book (bible) that has discrimination in it? Christians are the ones who voted Bush into office. You guys have the world hating you and this is something you're proud of? Yeah, your brains would be compared to "primates" and Bush is king chimp. Don't believe me? Take a look at him.

yeah, sure. also, why are birds so much better at flying, jellyfish so much better at stinging, bacteria so much better at living by eating rocks or sunshine, and so forth. specifically human behaviours: elephants have pretty good memories. ants are good at living in cities. beavers affect huge areas with their buildings. humans however do have a lot of different abilities that work well together all in the same package. so what did god do exactly, gather up various abilities of different organisms and combine them in one? or maybe humans are just lucky. someone had to win the lottery, it's been played for quite a few million years now.
why did god make humans look a bit like apes, rather than say a bit like dolphins?

Don't see much of a connection with an imaginary deity and brain complexity...
Humans are the only animal capable of being so ego-centric as to conclude that they're 'better' than any other... Methinks it's that self-centeredness that created the god-image in the first place...

Humans SUPERIOR??? We are the only creature that destroy our enviroment and our own kind for reasons other than survival. I don't call that being surperior. We'd be better off if we WERE still up in a tree eating a banana. (And there are still humans that urinate any where they please-- Have you ever smelled the air in downtown L.A. or Deep Ellum in Dallas??)

Okay.....there's a god because we are smart? Is that your premise? Fascinating. I'm sad to say that I know guys who will urinate anywhere. Does that alter the intelligence curve?
