I have a mother rat jack russell terrier mix still nursing mom dog that was diagnosed with hookworms, ringworms & tapeworms last night at the animal hospital. She still is not eating and has had diareah and just threw up white foam like spit. She was given sub-q's last night and I was sent home with liquid panacure dewormer that she is to take for 7 days. I gave her her first dose last night. Is this normal for having all these worms? Is this just one of these things that has to run its course? She still seems very lathargic. Please help?

For the one that says I hae neglected her. She was dumped in my yard literaly a week ago in a box with her puppies. I took her to the emergency vet last night (at a price of $270). So I have not neglected her in any way.

Took them all back to the vet, mother got worse. He gave her a vitium B shot and gave me meds to take home to stop the diareah and throwing up. She has not thrown up but once but seems to have red mucassy stuff comming out continuesly. I have her in a tuperware thing on puppy pads that I am having to change about every 30 minutes. I am force feeding her about 15cc of pedialite. Is all that discharge normal? Also puppies got wormed so did everyone else in the house.

Both hookworms and round worms will be cured by a basic pyrantel wormer. Tapeworms need the special wormer. Because she is nursing the babies should have wormer too. You should always worm Moms at least twice during the pregnancy and all of them after birth at about 4,5,6,and 8 weeks. You won't hurt them, and it will prevent problems. Hookworms will kill your babies.
All dogs pick up worms because they sniff dirt and butts. ALL DOGS. But your dog has them severely now because, quite frankly, you have been negligent in not worming her. You have to do it at least once a month, and you do it a lot when breeding. I worm all my dogs monthly and if they are expecting even more.
I hope they all survive. This is serious.
--------------------------------------------------------------
edit-- If this dog was dumped then that is understandable. But if someone had this dog and didn't care for it then that was more than unfortunate. You spent $270 on something that would literally take less than $20 to prevent. A bottle of pyrantel runs $5. The tape worm product is more expensive, but ivermectin would have solved the entire problem for $15. And because she was never cared for, you still might loose some babies or Mom. The person who had her during the pregnancy and early birth is/was negligent. That is the truth as harsh as it is.

Most dogs have worms in small numbers if not wormed regularly, but it is unusual for an adult dog to have problems caused by these organisms- this is far more common in puppies, especially hookworms and roundworms. (I'm not sure if you mean ringworm or roundworm- ringworm is a skin disease caused by a dermatophyte fungus, not a worm).
If she is infected by all of these in large enough numbers to be making her ill, it is likely that she is very debilitated and/or has another underlying illness that is depressing her immune system.
Panacure is a reasonable treatment, but you will need to watch her closely because she is probably going to become very dehydrated (and may need IV fluids) if this continues. You also said that she is nursing... if you can, you should remove the pups from her and hand-rear them yourself. If she's not eating & is losing fluids through vomiting and diarrhoea, then there is no way that she is going to get enough energy and fluids to feed her pups without doing herself serious damage. She needs to go onto a worming preventative such as 'drontal' and the pups need to be wormed at 6, 8, 10 & 12 weeks, 4,5 & 6 months, and every 3 months thereafter.
If you are concerned about her, talk to your vet again. If they give you the same response as they already have, consider talking to a different vet.

Keep giving her whatever medicine the vet prescribed. All of those things combined can make for one very sick dog. You can give her Pedialyte to help prevent dehydration. If she continues to be nauseous, ask the vet if it's safe for her to have some medcine to stop the nausea. While Panacur will work for hook worms and tape worms, ringworm is a fungus. Are you sure your vet didn't mean round worms? Here is some information on ring worm. IF your dog has this, the puppies can get it as well.

Normally, ring worm is treated topically and an oral medication is prescribed if the topical treatment doesn't work.

She needs to be treated. The tapes come from fleas, I hate to say this, but the fleas need to be treated. How old are the pups? They should be wormed starting as early as 2 weeks for roundworms. They will also have to be wormed for hooks too. If she is really infested, she could be having syptoms like this, but I would have the vet run the stool for more problems like Giardia and Coccidia as well. I would not be happy with a nursing ***** to act this way. The pups pull them down from nursing alone. If she is this sick, you might need to pull the pups and hand feed them or find another ***** to feed them for you. Have this ***** tested for heartworms now too! If she is a stray, you have no idea if she has heartworms.

Did the vet know she was nursing. She may need t have the puppies removed and you bottle feed. If she isn't eating she is not producing enough to sustain her and the pups. She will kill herself to take care of the pups.
You really need to speak to the vet also if the pups are aver 2 weeks old they can and should be wormed as well.
Tape worms are from fleas and Panacure won't treat that the pups need to be bathed and all the bedding needs to be treated.
there is a chance that you can loose all if you keep the pups with the mom please call your vet if she need sub-Q then she's dehydrated and then the pups are allowed to nurse VERY BIG PROBLEM

don't worry you have done the right thing by going to the animal hospital she is on the right medication it will run its course and she will be OK .It is normal for her to have all these worms exept ring worm ( i think you mean round worm) if she is in contact with other dogs or frequents places whear other dogs or ther droppings are common but if she is wormed regularly she should not get a build up of worms that will make her sick or poor in condition also she is probably just tired from nursing.

It is not normal unless your dog is not on heartworm preventative and flea preventative. Heartworm preventatives get rid of all worms but tapes and tapes are caused by fleas on the dog who eats them or a dog who eats wild rabbits.

Hookworms and tapeworms are normal but ring worms are not. Ring worms are not even worms. It is a fungus.

you probably mean roundworm-not ringworm which is a fungus- this is a normal reaction to being treated and should pass within the next couple days-if the pups are very young please suppliment their diet with puppy formula until your dog is up to resuming her duties

Thanks for saving them. You might want to get in touch with a rescue group.
