There is a barber and he has a sign on the window, it reads "I only shave those who do not shave themselves" Does he shave himself?

Yes= he shaves himself but he only shaves those who don't shave themselves therefore he doesn't shave himself.
No= He doesn''t shave himself but he shaves people who don't shave themselves, therefore he must shave himself.

I 'only' shave does not mean, i must shave. Just because the barber will not shave people who shave themselves doesnt mean that he must shave those who dont shave themselves.

Therefore he doesnt shave himself, someone else does. Probably his wife Letitia.

No. He doesn't shave himself. He shaves only people who don't have themselves, leaving open the possibility for some other barber to shave him. He then does not shave himself, but there is no requirement that he "must" shave himself.

If, on the other hand, the barber had a sign on the window that says "In this town, I shave all and only those who do not shave themselves" then we'd have a paradox. This is an example of what's known as "Russell's Paradox" after the philosopher Bertrand Russell.

There are two parts to this question.
1. Word placement is critical. He placed the word "only" before the word "shave". This actually means that he will only shave (and nothing else) those people; in other words, no haircut, no trim, no shampoo, etc. Nothing but a shave! That's specifically what the sign is saying!

2. As for the paradoxical part, one cannot include oneself in a sentence as "those" and "themselves". If he had specified "Those of us...", then yes, he would come into play. But that's not how it's written on the sign.

He excludes him self from the paradox, so he doesn't go crazy.
