Okay... let's see what we can find... the base reference is the site BibleGateway.com, from which one can search the texts of *many* different editions and versions of the bible.

On digging into them, I only find two references (other than persons mentioned that committed it), Amos 9:2 and Revelation 9:6, respecitvely, they are:

"Though they dig down to the depths of the grave,
from there my hand will take them.
Though they climb up to the heavens,
from there I will bring them down."

and,

"During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them."

Neither of these two would actually forbid it, by a strict reading. Most likely, its a rule created and published in later writings of the Church.

With an attempt to leave opinions and feelings out of it—a laughable goal when discussing religion, I know—I have failed to find a specific prohibition within bibles.

P.S. [Exasperated Opinion Time] The question, folks, didn't ask for a lecture or sermon, just a reference to chapter and verse, if possible. [Opinion Ends]

P.P.S. While Exodus 20:13 is an admirable idea, that technically isn't it, muder is, by definition, killing sombody *other* than onself.

It does not use the word suicide, but it does say that all murders will go to hell. There is no distinction made between murdering self and murdering others. Unlike if one murders another, one can not get forgiveness for suicide.. Once a person has died, he/she must face judgment and repentance is too late. "It is appointed to a man once to die and after that the judgment."

If a person was a christian at the time one develops a mental disorder that lead to suicide, I do not believe he/she will be lost if that person lacked the cognition to know right from wrong.

Life can get better.

Believe it or not, there are actually 7 cases of suicide in the Bible. Judas killed himself after feeling guilty, Zimri (1 kings 16:15-20), Ahithophel (2 Samuel 17:23), Saul and his armour bearer 1 Samuel 31:4, Samson (Judges 16:25-30), Abimelech (Judges 9:52-54)

The Bible doesn't specifically say, ''Don't kill yourself, this is a sin and you will go to hell for it''.....but some Christians believe it is a sin because:
Life belongs to God. It is never our place to take our own life or someone else's life.
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

God has a great plan for your life. God has created us in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). He created us for a purpose. God has a specific plan in mind for everyone.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11)."

"Thou shall not murder''.....this is one of the ten commandments, suicide is the delibirate act of killing oneself and therefore it can be seen as wrong.

Many Christians believe in the sanctity of human life, a principle which, broadly speaking, says that all human life is sacred -- a wonderful, even miraculous creation of the divine God -- and every effort must be made to save and preserve it whenever possible.

Other Christians think that suicide is an act that can be forgiven, and doesn't condemn you to hell.

edit: Sorry, I just want to make a comment about the person below me's answer. She says that Jesus had the power to save himself....I want to say though that Jesus died on the cross to save us which is not a sin as in the Bible it says: A man has no greater love than this; that he lay down his life for his friends John 15:13

This is a very debatable issue, and only God knows a person's heart, once again we are trying to do God's job of judging, but I did search it out and I think it is in Genesis, if you have a study bible you can look up suicide in the index and it is considered self murder according to the footnotes I read because I also wanted to see what Scripture had to say about it.But the final decision is up to God. It isn't something I'd challenge Him on and take the chance of eternal hell, but I also don't judge others who have done it and assume they are in hell, because only God knows the heart.

Its often the conclusion people come to after looking round a few different bible verse, stuff like don't kill and god knew you when you were in the womb ect ect. Funny how you can go and kill in a war or in self defense or animals for food but if you have a mental health problem its straight to hell with you.

Check this out for a few references to a couple of people who either begged god to kill them or did in fact kill themselves without being judged very heavily by their contemporaries/ God did not condemn them through the men chosen to write the story down.

Samson being one of them!

God created us in His image ,we do not belong to Ourselves we belong to God that is where Our breath of Life comes from He loved us so much that he gave Us His Son to die for Ours Sins so that not One will go to Hell ! So we are not to take Our own life ! Hell is a place of constant torture You really do not have to go there it can be on earth daily but if You accept Christ as Your personal Savior You will enjoy eternal Life.

even if you cant find it in the bible. there are plenty of testimonies of After life experiences. I know one person Personally that tried to kill himself and found him self in a hellish place of torture and great evil.
I have heard of several other stereotypical testimonies of people that came back from some types of Hell, but the one testimony that is prevailent, is the ones where a place of Morbid Despair is described. A wasteland where nothing exists. I opened my eyes Once and saw too, a place void of anything. i saw a spirit being above me in the sky and i asked him if i was dead. and the answer was yes.
