Ed ready is just " Enhanced Definition Ready ", which to me is not the answer for what's out there today. ED is not true High Def. HD ready( or Compatible) means the TV has NO built in HD tuner, so you will need some device that has the capability to provide the HD signal to the TV, which, as the term implies, is ready to receive it & display it. I would go for Full HDTV, with the built-in HD tuner, then you needn't worry about whether or not you will get a good HD picture.

A EDTV will down convert a HD signal to DVD quality and it has a lower resolution than a HDTV.

EDTV is for someone on a tight budget and who a big screen. Aslo for someone who will only watch analog basic cable or standard dvd movies. So in a about 5 years EDTV will be obsolete since we are going full HD in tv and dvd.

Now usually 2nd tier companies make EDtv but Samsung and Panasonic made really good ones last year. If you find a Panasonic EDTV that is the cream of the crop and it should on sale for about $1000(canadian)

The difference is resolution. The EDTV is only 480p whereas the HD ready TV can be 720p or even 1080p.

HD ready is either 720 or 1080 line resolution.

ED ready is 540, up to 720 lines....they make great boat anchors.
