it could be a chest problem. Go to the doctors again and be very adamant on them researching it further. Tell them about the pain and describe it in as much detail as you can. Tell them every symptom you have associated with this problem. It could be something worse than asthma so be persistent. Good luck.

You don't say what medicines you use now. A typical asthma regimen should include:
-short acting "rescue" bronchodilator inhaler-Albuterol or Xopenex-lasts 4-6 hours-use as needed
-long acting bronchodilator-Serevent or Foradil-lasts 12 hours-use every morning and evening
-possibly steroid inhaler-Flovent, Aerobid, Azmacort, many others-reduces inflammation in airways-use 1-2 times/day
-possibly leukotriene inhibitor pills-Singulair or Accolate-prevent allergic reaction that triggers asthma symptoms-variable dosing
-possibly antihistamines-Claritin, Allegra, others
-possibly nasal spray medication of various types
Your best bet to find the right regimen for you is to see a pulmonolgist, a doctor specializing in lung diseases. Only he can diagnose and treat your individual problems-not all asthma is the same and you may indeed have something other than asthma.
To help in the meantime, calliope has given some good tips, especially about trying to keep calm-anxiety only exacerbates symptoms.
Believe me, I know how it feels. Good luck.

Some suggestions:

*See a Respitory/Pulmonary specialist. Maybe they have a different medication or treatment for you to try if none of your current ones are working.

*Try making your mouth into a smaller "o" shape and breathe as deep and slow as you can. Sounds silly, but it helps, trust me. It concentrates the breath, making the breath feel more fulfilling and productive.

*Meditation/Relaxation techniques. Most of my asthma is caused by Anxiety Disorder ( and of course, smoking). When you are tense, nervous, or excited, your muscles constrict---and that includes your lungs and chest. Try breathing slow, and as deep as you can. Look up online how do some simple relaxation exercises to go with the breathing.

*Limit perfumes, colognes, smoke, and dust in the home as much as you can. Many sufferers find it harder to breath when they are going to bed or waking up. When you limit what I have mentioned above, your sleep time breathing is less contaminated, and it does make a difference.

*If you smoke, quit (or at the very least try and cut down significantly). This goes for marijuana as well. Quit or cut down quite a bit. Ask other not to smoke around you, or leave the room when they do.

*Sometimes caffeine can ease breathing---a very strong cup of coffee or a couple cans of soda can help. HOWEVER, caffeine can also be dangerous, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, or kidney/liver issues. Talk to your doctor FIRST before trying this.

Hope some of that helps, and good luck! :)
