I just want to know if I can post a letter in a regular postbox, if I'm sending it from UK to the USA. If not, do I need to go to the post office? Thanks.

You could try, but there is no guarantee it would get there- and the person in the US may have to pay excess.
I suggest you go to the nearest post office, have it weighed and get an airmail stamp. That way you know it will arrive and you'll get a bit of exercise. It should cost around 64p!!

You can not expect the letter to get to the USA with a first class stamp on, you need to have the letter weighed at the post office and they will also give you an air mail sticker....

No you cant

but you can do it without going to the post office -

Weigh the letter

Work how much it will cost to send (see http://www.royalmail.com for international postage rates)

Then put on the stamps up to the postage cost (you can use regular stamps as long as you put enough on)

You dont need an airmail sticker - just write airmail on the letter!

No Nathan, you will need to go to the post office and get an air mail envelope then have it weighed if its a standard letter, should cost you about 80p-£1 plus first class stamp...when you find out, can you please add details on here and let me know. thanx.
or failing that why not e-mail rather than write a letter...just an idea..
good luck.

You can post but it will need more postage. A first class stamp is only for sufficient postage for a small, light letter for delivery within the UK.

You will need to go to the post office, and get it weighed. They will stick an airmail stamp on it, also it's likely to cost more.

There's nothing to stop you doing that, and if the addressee is someone you don't like, that's a good way of p****** them off. If it gets there at all they will probably be asked to pay for more than it would have cost you to put the correct stamps in the first place.

I'm sure you can. UK citizens do it all the time.

Just make sure you have enough UK postage on it to get to the US.

If you're not sure, ask a local or go to the post office.

Good luck!

You can - if your friends don't mind paying the excess charge. That always used to be twice the amount you didn't pay.
It will also take a long time without an air-mail sticker because it will go by sea, sometime.
