www.expertvillage.com is a good site to visit, it shows you techniques for self defence. A grappling art would suit you, Judo, Aikido or Jiu-Jitsu but if you dont want to learn a Martial Art then visit www.expertvillage.com and type in Martial Art.

Dude, make yourself a reputation then. Like, say something like (study carefully) the dalai lama, or some sort of saint that goes the whole, peace, (insert non-fighting stuff) and people will generally pick up on that.
Yeah! Plenty of alternatives! Get creative! In a place like a bar where theres like no violence at all, you could just have your friends around you to make the potential opponent thinnk twice, and then have that air of peace about you that'd make then think a third time.
In a place like a war zone, then don't be there. If you are, then you'll find what you'd have to do there.

There are various types of martial arts that aim at using the enemy's force against him and without hurting the enemy. The two best known ones are Judo and Aikido. Judo is an olympic sport, so you shouldn't have problems to find a school near your place.
But if what you want to learn is self-defence do a web search with the keywords "self defence learn" and you'll get useful sites. This is the top page I got:

Try to escape the situation. If you have a choice just exit the situation.
If you have no choice do what you must to survive, worry about the legal implications later. I would rather be in a court room than a coffin.
There is nothing that anyone can offer you on the Internet that will help you defend yourself. You must go and train in the proper fashion.

You need to learn Self Defense techniques then. they focus mainly on breaking away or avoiding the attack and then allowing you a route of escape or a chance to incapcitate them depending on the situation.
Yes you can take a traditional class and learn, but a self defense class skips all the traditional bowing and uniforms and philosophy and focusing on protecting your personal self with some basic easy to use moves.
find a teacher that can show you these techniques. That is my best suggestion.

If you don't like striking then perhaps grappling would be better for you, as you can choke out and do submissions to an opponent, ending the fight without breaking or damaging them in most cases.
Here are some suggestions:
judo, jiu-jitsu, brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, aikido, sambo.
good luck!

Pepper spray.
Don't be such a wuss! If you are not willing to hurt an attacker then you need to avoid any place that might harbor dangerous people, like the world. And. Stay far from any bars.

Try to find jiu-jitsu or aikido classes in your area. They're the most well-known defensive forms of martial arts, so you're more likely to find lessons close to home.
