It just a matter whether to say yes or no. The British is smart enough to grant independence to its colonies, but always purposely or intendedly leaving alot of problems so that it can still in a position to influence and control these new countries.

France chosen to hold on for its benefits at the cost of the colonised people. A good lesson for the imperialist

Because Britain was a lot smarter than France. As an example look at trade figures for Britain and Singapore vs data for France and Vietnam. Of course the US was none too bright for getting involved after France gave up. We did manage to establish better economic relations with Vietnam however.

At that point, Britain knew in the back of their minds that large-scale colonialism wouldn't last much longer. The French and the Dutch... they still thought they could hang onto their Asian territories, just like in the glory days.

The British fought in Malaysia against the Communists, they could see which way the world was turning and got out when it was safe to do so.
