I've been begging my parents for a few months If
I could play the violin and my parents finally got one for me!

the problem is I don't know how to play it.
I looked on line and the lessons are kinda expensive.
Is there a way I can learn to play it at home?

Congratulations! Learning the violin takes a great amount of determination and dedication. I would really recommend you find a reputable teacher. I play professionally and have studied for 18 years. I have taught for 13 years. I still take lessons at least every other week. If you are afraid of the cost contact some local high school or college orchestra teachers and ask if they have some students who would like to take on a beginner. Just make sure they play well. You can also take lessons every other week to help defray costs. I know how expensive it can get but please please trust me. It is worth it. There are so many intricate techniques that if you don't learn correctly will hinder your progress. You can also get tendinitis and/or carpal tunnel if you play with incorrect technique.
Good luck and happy practicing!

I teach violin, but I live in Dorset, UK, so that's probably not much help. It's difficult to teach urself, but not impossible. U will need a tutor book and something to tune it to (pitch pipe or electronic tuner).U will also need a shoulder rest. I assume u have a bow and rosin. Tune the violin (GDAEform lowest to highest). Attach the shoulder rest. Hold the violin under ur chin, between the chin rest and shoulder rest, so that u can take ur left hand away. Place the bow on the a string, using the correct grip which the book will show u.Draw it across the string, and u should hear beautiful music. (kind of). U will have to make the notes with ur left hand fingers, so u will have to practise positioning. Hope this helps - if I can help further, contact me thru Yahoo Answers

We've had this discussion before in another question. the difference is that the person who asked last time had a year of instruction before she wanted to go off on her own. I will not say that it is impossible for you, but it will certainly be one of the top ten challenges of your life. You will need to find a good mentor, (someone who plays violin and is willing to work with you to show you the basics) and you are going to need to commit yourself to spending some time with the instrument on a daily basis. Most people who attempt this either quit or look for a qualified teacher, but if you think you are the exception, open the link below and get started. Give me a shout if you need anything.

I don't know. I want to learn too. I play bass and it is very similar. Try to look up on line some bass lines and lessons free, they are more common. That will help set up a basic knowledge of it.

Sorry to tell you this, but it's nearly impossible to learn the violin on your own, without a private teacher. See:
