Different pistols... different ranges.

You got to be more specific than just a generic pistol.

UPDATE:

Hey ss s, The word you are looking for is SHOT not SHOOT.
and the Vice President used a SHOTGUN, not a pistol.

your attempt at humor fails when you screw it up like that.

Depends, they make pistols that fire intermediate powered rifle rounds like the 5.56x45mm and the 7.62x39mm. They also make pistols that fire tiny things like .22short and 8x18mm. As you can imagine, range on these varies a LOT. Also, the bullet will probably be effective at almost any range you can hit the target at, pistol sights are not designed for long range accuracy. They are made to be easy to line up for firing at very close ranges. The barrel length also matters, are we talking about a detective-style revolver with a 1/2 inch barrel or a German Navy P08 Luger with an 11 inch barrel? There are many variables to cosnider, your question is too general.

It depends on the shooter and the size of the target. I would say most people would have a hard time hitting a human sized target at one hundred yards while standing up. I've seen most people shoot at a human sized target at around 25 yards, which means they have to learn to hit the target at that range.

If the pistol was put in a special vice so it couldn't move, I would say it could still hit a human sized target at 200-300 yards depending on the pistol.
