Old school method - hit a punchbag with small (4 or 6 oz) mitts. That's how guys like Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta used to strengthen their hands and wrists. Using big big gloves to do bag work may sem to protect the hands, but the wrist and hand is being protected, not strengthened, therefore causing the hand and wrist to become weaker, to the point where you would probably end up doing yourself some damage.

Yeah 'knuckle' push-ups work to strengthen your knuckles, wrists and musculature all at the same time. You can punch a tree if you really want to. I suppose you can punch the wall too but that would just damage the wall and annoy your neighbors.

The best thing other than the knuckle push-ups is a little wooden board that Japanese Karate guys use called a makiwara (you can get them from martial arts supply stores or you can make your own - google it)

They have a little flex to them so you don't actually break or crack your knuckles (not advisable) but they work to build up punching strength and knuckle toughness.
