We have looked on the internet, and there are lots of custom tours available, but we want to choose a reliable company. Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) of travelling in Patagonia

I had a fantastic experience - and did it all independantly. The buses in Chile are very efficient and relatively cheap, you can book lodges locally...if you have a decent guidebook, why use a travel company? Trekking in Torres del Paine, it was very easy to sort out lodges for the night - just try to book in advance if you can though, as they get popular.

If you want reliable companies, check out Exodus and Explore Worldwide, both UK-based. Although I didn't use them in Patagonia, I have travelled with both quite a bit.
