As a follow-up to IdiotWind's response, which is an opposite approach: you can extend the life of a DLP lamp [as well as the color wheel assembly] when you have completed showing the TV; by simply turning off the lamp while leaving ON the main fan for at least 20 minutes. Thereafter, turn the TV off via the main power switch. I currently have over 1,500 hours on a 4,000 max DLP lamp.
Good luck!

Apparently, there are settings in many DLP sets that can cause shorter bulb life. Here are a couple of articles that talk about this.

I hope this is the information you were looking for.

Turning down your brightness will have absolutely no effect on the LAMP it will however effect the grey ratio of the digital
reflection IC
Best way to make the Lamp last the longest is never turn it off
this will cause a loss of brightness level faster but the lamp
halogen stem wont undergo constant stress from
turning on and heating up and cooling down

Don't turn it on.
hahahah
The fastest way to age the lamps used in DLP and RP LCD, is to turn them on when they're not cooled all the way dow. So, if you accidentally turn it off, then turn it right back on, you just used up about 500 hours of it's life.
