If you're talking about domestic stock, the main problems are coccidiossis (which you can best prevent by making sure that their water and feed stay uncontaminated by droppings); paratyphoid (Salmonella) by quarantining new arrivals and/or by vaccination. You should also vaccinate for PMV-1 (paramyxovirus) if you do absolutely nothing else. The only other main problem is canker - trichomoniasis; and here, breeding from resistant families and/or medicating only as needed with some of the proprietary remedies (Emtryl, Ridzol, etc.) will help before the breeding season.

As for ornithosis - keeping your birds secure and quarantining new arrivals usually keep you secure.

I have heard they carry psitticosis, but not very often. The best preventive I suppose is not to let them fly with the wild pigeons, and have a roof over their enclosure so the wild birds can't poop into their area.
I have an aviary but don't let my birds fly free, so I'm not sure. But I've rescued a lot of wild birds too, and they never carried any diseases that I'm aware of.
