I'm wondering if I can get a student loan without a cosigner. Sallie Mae says no. I have one loan, but not for much. My parents aren't very helpful and aren't willing to cosign. Does anyone know of any decent lenders? I'm a dependent which is holding me back, however my credit score is above average. Any advice is appreciated.

The federal student loans do NOT require a co-signer. Talk to the financial aid officer at your school about financial aid options. The federal student loans are not credit based and there is not co-signer option.

You can absolutely get a student loan without a cosigner as long as you filled out the FAFSA and are qualified to receive financial aid.

You need to look into Federal Perkins Loans because these don't need cosigners, are government sponsored, have really low interest rates, and the government will help you pay them back as long as you are in school. Read more here:

You also don't need a cosigner for a Subsidized Stafford Loan, which has many of the same benefits as a Perkins Loan. Read more here:

There are always grants and scholarships you can apply to for free money that you don't have to pay back. Here are some good sights:

For a stafford loan you do NOT need a cosigner. Perkins loans do NOT require one either, however these funds are limited and your school may not have funds. After you receive you stafford, I would make an appointment with the Director of Financial Aid. Explain your situation, they may be able to provide you with some Perkins money. They usually hold some back just for such issues. Alternative or private loans usually require a cosigner if you have no credit history. However, your mom or dad DOES NOT have to be the cosigner. Good Luck!!!
