My friend goes to china from time to time and says that a nice football jersey would be 80 cents, a rolex for 5 $, and probably about 50 movies for 10 $.

Not a legit rolex.... My friend got me the Rolex Presidential from China for like 8 bucks. That's the one with all the "diamonds" around the edges and stuff, the one that retails for $10k+. As for Jerseys, not authorized or the same quality as the ones in the States, and the movies are DVD copies.

Many reasons. 1) They have a lot of money, it doesn't mean a thing for them to spend even more than 30k USD to buy a wrist watch. 2) They need the quality because they want to climb Himalaya or to go to the moon. 3) Because it'll give them the prestige. For some people having a prestige will help them doing their job. 4) They are collectors, and they value each watch as an investment. 5) Some Rolex is not as expensive as 24,000 USD, some only 4,000 USD, which is not far too expensive compared to Omega Speedmaster, but yes it is far more expensive than Timex or Keds. But if it's a tough decision to choose a Rolex or an Omega when you have 4000 bucks and you want to spend it for a wrist watch. 6) Because to have a Rolex is a lifetime dream, an ideals, a goal to achieve, because it is your passion. 7) Because logic is not only way of thinking for human being. People do illogical things in life, like falling in love etc. It is illogical things that we do that make us human, and not a machine/robot. 8) Because human need symbols, sometimes it can't be explained logically. Patriotism, devotion to a God, etc, besides having a Rolex, to mention some examples. Whatever the reason is, there're enough people in the world that keep buying Rolex from time to time that the watchmaker factory can survive until today and keep producing the watch.

A real Rolex has a sweeping second hand, whereas a fake Rolex has a second hand that stops at each mark on the dial.

The only real Rolex you will find for $5.00 is stolen by a crack-head looking for a fix.

u can get plenty of rolex watches in china for 5 bucks, but it won't be legit. i think that the prices that your friend listed are a little low, as i think while i was living in china i got my dvd's for about $1/each...and yes, they too were fakes. a nice football jersey will def be more expensive than that.

(Come on! A bit of commone sense here, mate! Do you REALLY think Rolex will sell their stuff for $5? $10 for 50 movies? Ummm ever heard of "PIRACY"?)

Thanks for the two points

Yeh right!

Something with an an intrinsic value of thousands of dollars around the world can suddenly be bought for 5 dollars in China, one of the poorest countries in the world!!

Doh!

They are inferior counterfeit copies made there by workers who are paid wages which anywhere else in the world would categorise them as "slave labor".

You can even buy fake cars there - try Googling it!

Yeah, and all my furnitures and stuff in my room are made from gold, including the computer I am using now.

Don't you know there're gold mines every where in China?

These are imitation products. Yes, many items are cheap there but may not have superior product quality.
