the pressure appears normal. It actually is fine. However, my guess is unless the Dr. told him he was a suspect, I believe the Dr. was just asking a standard question we ask everybody. However, when we ask, we should also state, in the same breath, whether you are a suspect or not, and why. There is a type of glaucoma called normal tension glaucoma, but there would have to be other facts making him at risk and none were mentioned, and a much more in depth testing including an mri would have been ordered. Did the Dr. mention his optic nerve looked like a high risk nerve? I suspect not, because , again, further testing would have been ordered. To answer on symptoms, there usually are none unless it is acute angle closure , and this would be very elevated pressures usually above 40, pain, nausea, and a mid-dilated pupil and maybe a red eye with a hazy cornea. The most common type of gx is open angle gx, and there are no smptoms and if gone udtected or treated, takes an average of 30 years to blind you. Tell him to call the Dr. and confirm he is fine. fyi....95% of eye disease is asypmtomatic..... Get routine eye exams.

Did the doctor tell him he has glaucoma or is at risk? It is standard to ask about family history of eye disease, doesn't mean the doctor thinks he has it. If he is worried, he should call the doctor's office and ask if he is a glaucoma suspect.
There is no way to lower pressure without medication. It is difficult to prevent getting glaucoma in the future as it is largely due to aging and anatomical factors. However, some things he can do:
Don't start smoking and quit if he does. This is number one thing he can do and the single most important controllable risk.
Eat a balanced diet, do moderate exercise, maintain a healthy weight. If he has or develops high blood pressure or diabetes-- follow doctors advice on these conditions to maintain a normal blood pressure and blood sugar.

Those pressures are totally normal (although you can have a type of glaucoma with normal pressures)... probably that was just a routine question he was asking. If the doctor suspected glaucoma, he would have done many more tests. My pressures are higher than that (but still barely within normal ranges) and my eye doctor always does a whole bunch of extra tests each year.
Supposedly marijuana will slightly decrease your pressure... I don't know if that's true, though. And your friend doesn't need to decrease his pressure, actually.
If he has questions or is worried, he REALLY should go back to the eye doctor and ask - he's the best person to answer!!
