How can I go about getting a passport? I want to travel to the UK sometime this December and would like to try and get it done fairly soon. As well, can anyone help with getting a visa (a regular one that allows me to work, as well as how to get a student one also since I'm planning to travel abroad next year). I send my appreciation to responses in advance. And I'll add any additional info if needed.

Ah, I'm from the US, Rowergirl. And indeed, I'm a student - an entering freshman at college. Thank you guys so much for your answers. I'm truly appreciative.

well a passport can be obtained from a local passport office. if you go to the travel portion of the state department's website you can get a list of passport offices in your area. you can sometimes save a few bucks by getting passport photos taken at a wal-greens or cvs. it normally take 4-6 weeks to get a passport but you can rush it for an extra fee. if you start now you shouldn't run into any major delays assuming there are no terrorist threats in the near future.
visas must be obtained through the british embassy. i believe that state department website also lists those somewhere. i'm not sure of the requirements for student or work visas. you'd have to contact the embassy for that.
hopefully this gets you started in the right direction.

Where are you from? If you're a student (or under 30 or 35) living in Canada, Australia, etc, you can apply for a Working Holiday Visa that will last up to 2 years in the UK. No need to get a "regular" visa. (Check out www.swap.ca if you're in Canada. I can't remember the name of the program if you're in the US or Australia.)

As for your passport, apply ASAP. The application is quite easy but if you're in the US there are huge backlogs right now and it can take over three months to receive your package.

You can start online right now. All the instructions are right here, and you can download the application if it's easier. Besides Passport Offices, you can pick one up at any post office.

For a potential December departure, I'd apply immediately and get it out of the way. Right now many people are stressing out hoping their passport will arrive before the departure date.
