The Ten Commandments are written to remind us that we need a Savior. If we could keep the commandments and not break them, then we would be righteous and worthy of salvation on our own, but since we are born into sin in a fallen world, it is not possible for any of us to keep the commandments. We are not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we are sinners. Jesus however, did not sin, but paid the price for the sins of the world, past, present and future. That is why all we have to do is believe in him for our salvation. He conquered death through his righteousness. He is the light and the way to our salvation. So, again, the Ten Commandments are to remind us that we need Jesus Christ for our salvation as he is the only one who could ever keep them.

The commandments are and will always be, a guide to doing what is pleasing and acceptable to God.
In old testament times, the law was all we had to rely on, but it wasn't ever capable of saving anyone.
All the law did was definitively prove that mankind needed a holy redeemer, if he was to ever have any hope of getting to heaven.
This was further reinforced by the fact that, due to the fallen human nature of mankind, only two human beings in the entire history of creation have been able to perfectly keep the law and live a sinless existence, and one of those was God himself.
So, just as he had always planned, God provided a more gracious way of salvation to those who are willing to swear faithful allegiance to him, through his son, Jesus Christ.
That "way" is the authentic church ... which has been endowed by God with all the power, grace, and authority that we need to have our sins forgiven ... to teach us the way of salvation ... and to empower us to be ultimately perfected in Christ.

Indicator that you are a sinner and come short of the Glory Of God. Gods knows nobody will be able to keep all 10. Therefore the need for Christ.
In other words they do not work as a deterant.
Beautiful, Brad.

Personally after john 3:16 "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotton son that who should believeth in him shall not parish but have everlasting life" I think the 10 commandments would be null and void after reading this verse. In fact after reading this ONE verse the bible as a whole is no longer a valid.

The Ten Commandments are not so different from state/country law, and ethics/morality:
Don't kill
Don't steal
Don't commit adultery
Don't worship idols
Don't covet your neighbor's spouse
Don't covet your neighbor's property
Don't forget the Sabbath day
Don't tell lies about your neighbors/get them in trouble
Don't disrespect your parents

Following the Commandments is not the requirement needed to spend eternity with God. They are merely guidelines for how people (all people, whether they believe in God or not) should live their lives because it is what is good for society as a whole.
Seek God first...and he will lead you.

They show us just how sinful we are and how we all fall short of the glory of God. That we in ourselves cannot keep them and need a Savior to redeem us and save us. But yes we are still to strive to obey God's Laws which is the result of our love and life in Jesus Christ. Our Faith and trust in Jesus Christ and His atonement for our sins saves us. Obeying His Commandments in The Lord's strength is the result of Our faith, love and relationship with Jesus. When we belong to The Lord due to our Faith in Jesus, our desire to love, obey and serve Our Savior follows. God's Words that were etched in stone are transferred to the born again Christian's heart thru Faith and love for Him. God bless

That is the Law of Moses... the Word of God.
Jesus came to bring Grace and Salvation, but he did not come to do away with even one letter of the Law.
God does not change his mind.
People do... when they have been given Grace.
God Bless You.

It is not generally understood that there are two kinds of law given in the old testament. One is mosaic law and one is god's law. Mosaic law was done away. God's law was not. The trick is in knowing the difference.
Edit. There now, I have cast my last pearl for a while. Good evening.

They were given to the Jews at a point in history. They are good ideas but don't make a person righteous.
