Is pushing a car off a cliff illegal in the United States if you do not report it to the insurance agency? Even as a crim major, I am not sure about this one. Basically, the circumstances would be to buy a car from a junk yard and push it off a high cliff and walk away. I think this has to fall under an environmental law or litter law.
I'm not doing this myself, it just came up in conversation.

That's not quite what I'm going for...it would be thrown off a cliff somewhere. Not on your land.

And it would not be "my" car per say. Just a car from a junkyard.

What if you didn't get caught?

You can do what you want with your car. As long as it's not for insurance fraud like you said. And obviously don't do it in a populated area (or possibly populated area) or on some else's property without permission.

However, it would probably fall under abandoning auto, litter, or dumping laws if you simply left a mess.

So if you pushed your car off. Collected everything and properly disposed of it, you should be fine.

Added: If you got a car from a junkyard. I assume you paid for it or they gave it to you. So it's "your car". I have an old broken down car that I haven't gotten rid of yet. I drive my other one to work. But the non running one is still "my car"

You can do this on public lands I guess. But make sure you pick every single piece of the car up and not damage anything of the goverments (roads, signs, ect)

Let me add to your hypothetical situation.

If you own the car and you own the land the cliff is on, it is probably not against the law. You can not litter your own land nor can you criminally destroy or vandalize your own property. Leaving it at the bottom of your cliff may be a city or county code violation and you may have to remove the vehicle so it does not present a public safety threat.

If you do not own the car it would obviously be a crime. If you do not own the land it is basically illegal dumping.

Yes littering or criminal damage on the person's land the car landed on. Good question.

It is littering and vandalism to property.

If you dont get caught its just one of thousands of unsolved crimes that happen every day.
