you wouldnt lose belly fat by doing situps or crunches because all they do is build muscle - they do not burn fat.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio (burns fat all over your body - we cant spot reduce body fat), do it 4-6 times a week for 30-50min - those are running, jogging, swimming, cycling, elliptical, hiking, rope jumping etc.

Weight loss and fitness is always a long term commitment and never a quick fix. If you really want to reduce your weight a bit, this is a complex regime, that should help, I would get a pencil to write it down, in case you forget any of the intricate details. Currently only using the criteria 'lose weight' there are 8,893 questions and answers on Answers already. Mis-spell it as 'loose weight' and you get another 2,483 ! 'Weight loss' will add another 1,783. 'Too fat ' 14,771 and 'overweight' 2,557 and 'over weight' 24,858 !!!!!. 'Diet Pills' gives 582, Adios 122, Hoodia 193, 'pink patch' 113, 'Xenical' 84 'Reductil' 76, 'Slim fast' 210 (and Slimfast 69 ), lipobind 26, lipotrim 43 and 'orlistat' 39 . Do you spot a pattern here? Here comes the only answer, no tricks, no pills, no short cuts, If you really want to lose weight, loose weight, not be too fat or overweight, follow these instructions carefully:- 1) Eat less 2) Take regular vigorous exercise Repeat 1+2 forever I am afraid this answer of mine is cut and pasted about 10 times every day, though I do update the numbers. What would really be the point is creating a new answer each time for an identical question, which actually has an answer that everybody knows already?

Trust me: you CANNOT get a flat stomach from doing sit-ups. It is 100% diet-based. You can burn calories at the gym and the energy can come from your body fat, putting you on the path toward tightening your stomach. This combined with putting yourself on a calories deficit (eating less than you burn every day) will cause you to lose weight.
Finally, sit ups will strengthen the stomach muscles, though they will NOT be visible until you shrink the fat cells down with dieting. Doing sit-ups too many times per week will lead to injuries, including a bad back, as you have found.
If you truly want a flat stomach, join a gym and hire a trainer to put you on a regimen. It isn't as bad as many think. In fact, it becomes fun and you will enjoy many other benefits in addition to a tighter midsection. I say this to steer you away from the gadgets you see on TV - I promise you that none work and all of those demonstrators are models that are on diets. Further, any attempt other than diet and exercising the RIGHT way is a big waste of time. Good Luck!

You can try pilates with altered motions for your back pain, if you go to a fitness class the instructor can help, or the pilates videos will specify how to do the alternative exercises. You can also just do strengthening exercise laying on your back somewhere comfortable flex at the knees, tilt your pelvis forward and engage your abs you'll feel it instantly you hold it for atleast 10 sec atleast 3 times. These will strengthen your abs. Losing fat comes with diet unfortunately.
