I totally do not believe anyone who says that they have no fear of death. The only people who have no fear of death are either out of touch with reality, or already dead.
I would think that atheists, above all folks, would fear death, but I don't know if that is so. Seeing how many of them have lied about it, I think their fear must be horrible.
Even Christians fear death...I know that I am afraid of the pain, and afraid of losing touch with my loved ones. And I would be a liar if I didn't admit that I have had my moments of doubt, just like everyone else.
But, because I was able to face my doubt, and my fears, I can honestly say that Jesus also has healed my doubtful mind, and calmed my fears.
I have tried to answer as honestly as I am able...and I have neither attacked nor tried to analyze the questioner.
I gave this question a star...I want to see how many really honest answers you will get.
Not many so far...

Everyone is so sensitive about being attacked! I am an atheist, therefore I do not believe in an afterlife. I don't fear death, but I don't look forward to it either. So, I will live my life to the fullest because that's all there is. Yes, it is the end of all things, which is the way of nature. Fear of death is the reason mankind created religion in the first place. It's inevitable, so there's no point making up fairytales to gloss it over.

I am definitely afraid of dying slowly with a lot of pain. I do not believe in a heaven or hell but because and only because of an ''experience'' that I had after my brother died and because of some other ''experiences'' that some very stable and level headed people I know have had I feel that there is some kind of existence after death if only for a limited time. We are energy and energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can be changed. I do not need to believe in this and before I had this experience I did not believe in even that much. If there is no existence after death that is o.k. too. Life here on earth is what is important. I am an Atheist.

I used to be brutally afraid of death. It's a basic need, really: Self preservation. I've come to accept death as not only inevitable, but indeed, necessary.
Look at it this way: For an Atheist, death is the end. You won't be around to be bothered by it. Any suffering you had in life ends with it.
The part that bothers me most about it now is the impact it has on the survivors. I want to be remembered, not mourned.

I don't know of many theists who embrace death...most fight it every step of the way...if the afterlife is more important than life itself, why waste time searching for cures for cancer, AIDS, or any other disease? Why not embrace death, if is God's will? Death is not bleak, everything dies. As long as I understand that, I will continue to make the most of my time on earth. Let's say you go to the doctor (for whatever reason) and it turns out you have a rapidly spreading form of cancer and Only a few months left to live...what would you want to hear? Sure, it would make you feel better if the doctor told you everything would be fine and you would live live a long healthy life...but wouldn't you want to know the truth?

Although I am not an atheist, I suspect that they see death just as you said...an end of things. A natural part of life. Therefore, they would not necessarily be afraid of it. I do find it difficult to understand however how someone can live all of life without a purpose...other than what makes them satisfied for the moment only. It hardly seems worth it. Life is no picnic whether you believe in God or do not believe in Him.

I don't fear death.
I don't believe in god, or an after life.
As for as death being bleak, I don't see it that way, because I die I am able to complete the real cycle of life as my body decomposes and I become rich fertile soil allowing other forms of life to live. This cycle happens everyday for everything that lives and is. It is a true form of giving back to nurture others and I don't need to have an afterlife it is my purpose to make my life rich and meaningfull here and now and I don't need to believe in anything to accomplish this goal other than myself and the people I surround my self with.

Why do you think Christians are unsure of themselves? I believe that Christians are afraid of what they do not understand. They fear death so they completely disregard the truth and hope that A whimsical and magical paradise will come of their death. It breaks my heart knowing that they live a lie. As atheists, we are like older brothers and sisters to the Christians, who in a sense are really just children crying for help. wanna cookie little Christians?

Atheists are free thinkers who question the doubts openly instead of following blindly. When one do not get answer for his search for truth in the existing religions he free himself to search by himself. There is no question of any body afraid of death, which is a natural process.
