Well what was your MOS? Then did you stop by ACAP before you got out?

Having a 23 year old son who also has just finished his Army stint over in Iraq and Kuwait in two tours, and now working in a restaurant as a waiter, I wish I could offer you some more alternatives. I know he says he plans on using his Army money for his college education beginning in the Fall, but, he doesn't have any glowing academic history to suggest that he'll follow through with those plans, although I truly hope he does. I know my dad thought the same about me back 35-40 years ago. I'm so glad I "disappointed" him by getting three college degrees and having a moderately successful career (or two). I'm sorry I can't have a job for you since I'd hire every American serviceman on a good paying job, with good insurance, IF I had that kind of money, BUT, as it is, I'm glad I could buy my son a new car a few years ago between his deployments, and help him out financially with a few gifts here and there. I will pray to God / Jesus for your success in finding employment and caring for your son. I don't know if that means anything to you, but I can promise you that several times in my life, when all my wonderful plans seem to fall through the floor, Jesus was THE ONLY ONE who could see me through to success. God has heard my prayer for you. Others will do the same, and you are going to be perfectly fine. I promise. Trust me on this one. God Bless you.

First advice I'd give is to consider self employment. If you work for a big company where the supervisors generally have no military background, you may not understand why no one takes responsibility or makes a decision.

In any event, figure out what you LIKE to do, and look for work doing that.

I'm a veteran, was Infantry, now I'm in Law. I met another veteran recently who was also Infantry, he has his own construction business. Another veteran I know owns a restaurant.

What do you like doing that people would pay you to do?

No matter what state you live in, go to the State employment office. It's called something different in every state. It is where you look for a job. They will assign you a counselor. Talk with him or her about your skills and experience. They may give you some simple tests to see if you have sales ability or math ability or whatever. Make sure you get into a field that you like. There is nothing worse than getting up in the morning to go to a job you HATE. Good luck and thank you for keeping us safe here at home!

Try the national parks. or The Post Office even. As a veteran, you get extra points added to your total score.
