The first Mormon prophet (Joseph) supposedly had a vision in the 1830's where God told him to have multiple wives. This was later documented in one of the Mormon religions books called the Doctrine & Covenants. In order to reach the highest level of heaven (they have 3 levels), you had to practice polygamy. This was supposed to prepare you for the afterlife, where you will become a God. In the afterlife, you and your wives are supposed to populate and rule your own planet.

But, the Mormons were run out of Illinois and Missouri in the 1840's, mostly because of polygamy. They fled to Utah, which at the time was owned by Mexico. They settled in Utah because it was outside the US, and they thought they would be OK practicing polygamy there. But, the US took over Utah after the war with Mexico, and came down hard on the Mormons for polygamy. The Mormons tried several things to appease the US government, including naming the state capital and one county after one of the US Presidents. But, the pressure became too great, and Utah desperately wanted to become an official state. So, in the mid-1890's the prophet (leader of the church) at the time announced that he had a vision that God said they no longer need to practice polygamy. A few groups splintered off from the main church, denouncing this new relevation (saying it was only political). And, even before that time, Mormon groups were sent to Canada and Mexico by the prophet, in order to keep polygame alive (realizing that the US government would evenutually win).

To this day, there is a polygamist group in British Columbia, Canada (they still call themselves Mormons). And, there's a large group on the Utah Arizona border (their prophet is currently in jail).

Well, since a pimp is a guy who controls prostitutes, that isn't what we are at all.

What you are talking about is polygamy, and the church went through a period of time where polygamy was practiced. Once the law was passed that said it was against the law, it was stopped.

There is a group that still practices it. They are called the FLDS. They are not connected to the LDS church at all. They are totally seperate body. The LDS church (mormon church) doesn't allow polygamy, and people who practice it are ex-communicated.

Here's a site that talks about this. Maybe you will learn something from reading it. Also, I'm going to put the churches website here for you.

I grew up in Oregon and there is a real high Mormon community in Oregon Washington Idaho and of course Utah since that is where the main temple and BYU is located. I actually grew up next door to the Osmond type that would not drink caffiene or smoke or do anything against what the book of mormon says and those kind of mormons are normally called utards. Now to answer your question in the old day Brigham Young and Joeseph Smith did marry multiple wifes and once in a while you will see or hear a story of a mormon normally in Utah trying to marry more then one wife. But growing up around alot of mormons I have mixed feeling about them. The only kind of mormons I will hang out with are jack mormons wich my best friend and husband where both raised mormon but they are jack mormon wich jack mormons are the ones who will drink booze or smoke or do anything against the book of mormon. For more information go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Young and you can also look up joseph smith. Otherwise thats about all I can tell you I now live in the south where mormons are not that big and known its mostly southern baptist or catholic where I live now.

We do not marry more than one wife. Any member that is found to be practicing polygamy is promptly excommunicated, no ands ifs or buts. And in the Bible there are several stories of god allowing people to have more than one wife. Jacob, Abraham, and so on. Mormons were told by the Lord, when the Church was first started, to practice polygamy. Then they were commanded to stop it, and so it was stopped immediately by the Church. That has not stopped the endless persecution that we get because of that.

EDIT: Joey, we do not practice it AT ALL. it is not common at all. it is non existent.

A question was asked just the other day....

Why do mormons try to justify polygamy if they don't believe in it and don't practice it?

My answer..... (no, it was not picked as "best")
Why do we try to justify polygamy... because non- Mormons insist on asking lame questions, and refuse to accept that we're telling the truth about what we believe...

... if we don't believe... Actually, it's as much a part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the animal sacrifices of the "Law of Moses".... BTW- the law of Moses was intended to teach the people about the need for a great and last sacrifice (aka- Jesus Christ). Just as "believers" no longer make animal sacrifices, we no longer practice polygamy. Yes, there were a number of Old Testament prophets who had more than one wife- Abraham, Jacob (aka, Israel), David, Solomon... Some did it correctly, but some (David) got in trouble for wanting more than God gave him...

... and don't practice it... Guess I already covered this- No, mainstream Mormons don't practice polygamy- it was made illegal back in the 1800s. There are wack-job break-off groups who do practice polygamy, in Southern Utah, Colorado, etc... But as I said, they're wack-jobs. Maybe they think they're too good to live by the 12th Article of Faith.

Source(s):

12th Article of Faith- "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law."

As a former Mormon, it is my understanding that when the taking of more than one wife was outlawed back in 1878, the practice was stopped and after that, any Mormon who took more than one wife was expelled from the church. So there were those who broke away from the church and formed their own church where they could have more than one wife. And they say it works for them. They refer back to the prophets of old who had more than one wife.
Anyway, when you say Mormons are cool, I have to agree. Although I don't agree with them on some issues, I think that the ones who live their religion are wonderful people.

Well first off a pimp is not a man with more than one spouse. A pimp is a person who controls and sells prostitutes. People who have more than one spouse are polygamists. Also modern day Mormons are not all polygamists, there are some who still follow this tradition, but in the last 50 years ago polygamy has become less common in the Mormon life.

did u know that at one time in the US it was legal to shoot mormons? they were under a lot of persecution & at that time, a woman could not be self-sufficient, she was either married or lived with her father... So, the Lord commanded that they marry more than one woman for their protection and support. Also, so the church could grow. as a LDS woman in that day & age, i would have rathered to marry a man who already had a wife than marry a non-member who would not uphold or respect my beliefs or if he got sick of me could shoot me without consequence! In any case, polygamy is no longer something which is done in the church - it served it's purpose and is no longer necessary

Deep sky, you seem like an idiot, no wonder why you don't have scholarly text as your proof.

Polygamy protects the women from knowing if she is poor or needs help, if also allows men to balance population with women, it also allows women to know who the father or their baby is, and many other various reasons.

Salam.

Mormons no longer believe in polygamy.

However, some fundamentalist mormons still do.

And Muslim is also another religion that practises polygamy.
