You can appeal the discharge code - but you will have to prove that you got it in error.

Count your blessings - at least you got an honorable discharge.

You can make application to the Board For Corrections of Army Records or the Board For Corrections of Navy Records. The nearest chapter of Disabled American Vets can help you with the address. But, you will have to demonstrate that the military made a mistake in assigning you a re-enlistment code of RE-4.

OK the official word is that you need to wait 2 years then apply to the DOD to have it upgraded. while you are out of the service be good when you apply for the upgrade they look at what you have done since you have gotten out and your record to make there decision. so do some community service. also the national guard will accept an re-4 so you may want to spend some time as a weekend warrior that will look great on you when you apply to the DOD

Sorry but no. Count your blessings that you didn't get the Other Than Honorable discharge that should have gone with your two alcohol related incidences. You already got the world with what you got so asking for the universe is kind of going to far. Think of all the VA benefits you got to keep. Normally the RE4 with what you said you did would have been taken from you too.

Yes, you can request an appeal board, and have your military record looked at. If they deem that the trouble you got into was insignificant, and you show that you have learned from the mistake that you made, then they will up your code, and allow you to reenlist. Seen it happen. The whole process begins with contacting your designated congressman for your state.

Go to a recruiter and see what your choices are. See if you can go back into Active Duty, if not...then Guard or Reserve. If not, tough luck.

Contact your congressmen. He or she might be able to tell you your options and expedite the paperwork.
