I took a *long* time to decide, and that it embodied several bits of my personal philosophy from the last 4 decades of breathing.

Oh, and I went to a stellar shop that boasts amazing artists. No going on the cheap here, although considering the quality of the work I sometimes feel like I ripped them off...

well my first few tattoos i did regret, not because i got them but because i didn't have the knowledge to search out a good tattoo artist. i realized that i had poor quality tattoos and regretted THAT so when i thought of a tattoo idea i waited. i knew that i wanted it for four years before i found an artist that i wanted to do my tattoo. once i met him my tattoo ideas started flowing. he is such a creative person. i started keeping a list of tattoo ideas. some of the ideas i realized fairly quickly wouldn't be something i'd want to have as a tattoo but others have definitely stuck with me. also i feel it is important to have a tattoo that has some kind of meaning to them personally so that you will have a connection to it and it won't just be something tattooed on your body with no point.
it is definitely important to decide what you want and then wait. just take time to decide for sure what you want and to get a talented artist who can make your tattoo more than what you thought it could ever be.

I always thought of getting one but wasn't really sure what I wanted. I was pregnant and lost my daughter. Since I never got to know her and was only able to hold her, it was my deciding factor and I got a cross done in remembrance of her. Once I decided to get one I came up with my own design..I wanted it to be unique and not like others. It symbolizes to me a relationship that we never got to have, my love for her, and that I'll never forget her...that even though she was never able to take her 1st breath, she is still very much a part of this family. I knew I would never regret getting it no matter how old I became and would never be embarrassed by it. I'm very proud of my tattoo and always will be.

My tattoo (a butterfly), though cliche to some, has been incredibly meaningful in its symbolism to me. I first read a line in French literature that says "You must put up with one or two caterpillars in order to find a butterfly", meaning that there have to be some hardships before good things emerge. Also, it represents growth. I have had a huge amount of hardship two years ago in my career, and finally had the growth that lead to happiness with it. So, after a year of deliberation about what symbol I would affix to my body, I was perfectly confident that this symbol that has been meaningful to me for 7 years would continue to be meaningful to me. It now represents to me 1) my love for French, 2) my own personal growth, and 3) the beauty that all women possess.
