Honey have you tried Googling it? Or ringing the council? What is it for? Your question is unclear. If its for stories etc, just look at what places were affected (eg- the Kent Hotel) and go from there to find the people there at the time. Also have you rung the council? They are usually very helpful. Just do some searches.

If you live in Sydney, go to the State Library and look at the newspapers of the time. You should find all the stories you want there. There are times when libraries are better than the internet and this could be one of them.

look i was camping not far from newcastle when the earthquake hit...

the day before ...
we knew something was wrong cause the fish were on the shore ...
the oysters were rancid...

that morning ....
all our camping gear had fallen. over ......
when we rode our bikes up to the street we saw that the road had cracks in it the our tires could fit in...

we packed up straight away so we could head home...

we weren't going to stay another night...

the town was a mess...

a person i meet years later told me he felll off a balcony that morning and had to get splintlers taken out of his ar$e....
