We are thinkning of re-locating to Tasmania from Perth, but I fear that it is going to be full of older people!! If anyone has any info on where is nice to live and what sort of work is over there that would be great. I have searched all of the real estate and employment websites but I would love some info from someone who has or does live there
Thanks

Tasmania is a beautiful place with great cities like Launceston and Hobart and the best beer in the country with Cascade and Boags. There are lots of young people there. Work availability depends on what you want to do. Check the classified ads in the Hobart Mercury and the Launceston Examiner on a Saturday for jobs available. They are online.

I am 39 and live in Hobart for the past 7 years (left for a while) but grew up here. I am a nurse and husband in emergency services.

It is very scenically beautiful - clean, green, sunny but cold in winter. We have a great cafe scene - down at Salamanca Area. Some nice modern places you can eat and relax. There are a variety of festivals during the year but our biggest and most popular is the Taste of Tasmania at Xmas. Others are Ten Days on the Island and the Midwinter Festival. These tend to bring a lot of people out even in the cold weather. We have theatre groups and touring plays/music.
Typically on the weekends we would go out for brekky to a cafe - sit on sofas and drink coffee - read newspapers, buy some veges from Salamanca Markets. There are loads of great drives to visit vinyards or go walking (even for unfit people).

In Summer we tend to spend alot of time outdoors - around the wharf area -sitting out at cafes or wine bars...we go to the beach alot (beachs are very clean and safe and very close by).

Work: I am not sure but if you are in a traditional job you get work eg. police, nurse, secretary. The Arts is a growing industry here and there is room to make business but I think it would take a while to get it up and profitable. There is alot of Government jobs here and always grants for Art type projects. Shopping here is limited by we do have a few pretty cool little designer stores with alternative designs. Our produce is meant to be top quality.

There are loads of nice to live places - close to town and out of town. Feel free to email me through this site and I can let you know where to avoid.

Come for a visit and get a feel for the place.

Since i'm a tourist i really cannot tell u abt the work conditions etc but i lived in Perth for 8 months and i've been in Launceston for a month now. Perth is definitely a better place, maybe more populated but it has better transport, better shopping and most importantly, much better weather. It's a more lively city for sure! But if u want the country life and wonderful scenic views from your bedroom then Tassie is for u!
