I have no idea, because asking for forgiveness for sins (without animal sacrifice) existed in Judaism long before Christianity came into existence. Although many Christians don't know this.
Original sin still exists. The propensity to sin still exists. Sin still exists. Satan supposedly still can control people.
So honestly, I don't see it either. Christians claim that Jesus opened up a way to heaven. But, from what I have learned, that way to G-d always existed, regardless of Jesus. Or perhaps, inspite of.

Hebrews chapters 9 and 10 answer your question. In the old covenant, the Israelites offered unblemished animals of their flocks as an offering for sins. They had to do this every year. But the blood of bulls and of goats cannot take away sins.
But Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins forever.
"And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God" (Hebrews 10:11-12)
Jesus took away sins. Repenting doesn't take away our sin. Repenting isn't the saving act. Christ dying as a sin offering is the saving act.
"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is not remission." Hebrews 9:22
There can be no forgiveness without the shedding of blood. So you could ask for forgiveness and repent every moment of the day, and it wouldn't amount to anything if Jesus had not died His atoning death. His death makes true repentance and forgiveness possible.

There is a book that you might want to read. That would be if you really wanted to know why Christians say that Jesus died for our sins. You don't have to read it all, only the first fours books of the section called " The New Testament." The first one is named Matthew, and then the others are named, Mark, Luke, and then John.
Read those and you will know what they are referring to.

Jesus died to pay the penalty for the sins of God's elect (chosen ones). That was to restore people to a right standing before a just and holy God.
We still ask for forgiveness and repent of our sins in order to maintain fellowship with God.

There is no such thing called original sin. Children of Adam don't carry Adam & Eve's sin. It is their sin alone, and God has already forgiven them due to their repentance.
Humankind is given free will to choose to be good or bad. Thus, even at the point of Adam's creation, human is meant to be able to commit sin as human is equipped with lust and desire as well.
The burden of sin is yours and yours alone. Nobody else should carry and be punished for you. But God is just. He created us with weaknesses but He is Oft-Forgiving as long as you want to improve yourself and repent sincerely for all your sins. Ask forgiveness from God, and by His will, you'll be forgiven. No sacrifice or blood is needed.

It means the following:
"You are a bad person and you won't go to heaven because you are bad. Even though god created you that way, he's kind of on a millenia-long period and he's kicking his own *** about his huge screw-up known as mankind. Therefore in order to curb his craving for bloodshed, he strung his own son up like a side of veal and now he's in a better mood, so now you can get into heaven as long as you pay ten percent of your earnings (before taxes) to a church."

it means as per the Christians that they are trapped in sin, and have to sin, and Jesus came and died for them to save them...and now they have to bow like crazy saying sorry over and over I sin. And there God hovers over them with great pride in his righteousness making everyone feel like crap, when he knows we can not help ourselves.....like a cripple, and God, the one who walks gloats over the cripple saying "say sorry you can not walk you cripple".
For our God can do all things, it is because you all go your own way and desire sin, and hate perfection or do not believe in his righteousness.....that is why Jesus was sent.............so you can walk in all his rightousness if you seek and ask him to help you.....romans 3:10-18.
but I never found Jesus in my seek, not personally anyway....I found him crazily though.

By saying Jesus died for our sins, people are saying that through his death all sins have been forgiven but you are still able to commit sins because of "original sin". when jesus died on the cross the gates of heaven were supposedly opened and people were now able to enter and their sins forgiven. we are still required to ask for forgiveness and repentance because we are human and still commit sins and need to have it taken away and in purgatory we become fully cleaned of our sins and can enter heaven when it is done. also people used to sacrifice beings to God as a way of being forgiven, with Jesus' death on the cross he gave himself as the final sacrifice for humanity.

We are to ask forgiveness. Jesus took our sin as a suitable sacrifice for us... atonement, otherwise we would be guilty of the law and be punished.
