you may want to check into auditory processing disorder if you have ever been diagnosed with dyslexia you may have trained yourself early in life to spell out things that is not the only cause it can come from allot of conditions if you have been doing it all your life it may have manifested itself into an OCD type situation, Have you ever had a hard time focusing on things?
Just like people who lose their sight have to depend on other senses it is human nature to adapt to our own shortcomings
although it may be annoying you definitely are absorbing audible conversation on a level that most are not
Look on the bright side when people are wandering if you are listening to them YOU REALLY ARE
I have a quirky OCD thing myself I rehearse everything I say before I speak it it is annoying sometimes but I also have the luxury of really thinking before I speak which some might do well to have my lil curse

If you do this repeatedly and automatically I agree with the other answer. It is probably a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I did a quick search on the internet and did not find anything but it may be an unusual form of OCD but that does NOT MEAN that you are the only one.

I agree with the person above, it sounds like a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Google it and see if you fit the profile.

Sounds like you spend too much time in chat rooms.
I don't have an answer to the affliction you are referring to, but the day I realized I spent too much time in chat rooms was when I heard a song on the radio by the Canadian group "Prozzak" and the ICQ "uh oh" sound was in it and I thought I was having another dream.

i do that alot too, and many other things, when i read i have to re-read the same sentence atleast 8 times no joke and then i can move forward, but then i always find myself going back and re-reading it again, and when people talk to me i spell. i dont know why but it sounds to me that you have ODC or obsessive compulsive disorder

You might want to do some research online--try googling "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" or, ask your doctor and maybe you can get a referral to someone who can help.

if you spell the words correctly and understand what you are hearing, that is not a problem.....it's just a mental visualization of the word. Pretty common actually.

It's not called anything. It's not a disease. Is it interfering with your life? Does it matter? I'm gonna call it reetee disorder. Tell people you have reetee disorder.
