Ok, I'm 19 and a resident of MA and I want to be a BPD officer. I want to start training on how to fire a weapon and I want to join a gun club so I can practice. However, I am so confused as to all the requirements. I've heard from people that you can go into a firing range, pay like $20, and shoot guns. However, most places I have read about, you have to join the club as a member, which costs like $200, but you have to have either aN FID or an LTC. How much is it to obtain an FID and what exactly do I have to do to get one? I don't want to become a gun club member because I will only go a few times a year, and I don't think $200 seems worth it.

Move away from the east coast and things will get far simpler. Most states don't have any FID, only those states that don't trust their citizens to use their constitutional rights. Where I live in South Dakota you need only be 21 to purchase a handgun and we have several ranges to shoot at that are either free or very low cost if you join a club and want to shoot competitively. Heck my club used the local police range for competition.

But seriously if you are going into a career that dictates that you carry a gun daily, you should join a club even at $200 a year. Carrying a firearm full time is an awesome responsibility and you need to commit to being completely safe and proficient with a firearm. You can't really do that just going a couple of times a year. Take it seriously. It requires a lot of time to get good with a handgun. Just hitting the bullseye is only part of it. Shoot/don't shoot situations, tactics and more should all be embraced. It's not so simple as point it and pull the trigger.

Unfortunately most law enforcement agencies don't have the budget for the rank and file officers to become really proficient and most officers don't make enough money that they feel they can go and shoot every week like they should, and many wouldn't do so anyway. But try. Take the commitment personally and get all the training you can.

Good luck
