They sleep with their eyes open thus why it is hard to tell if there are asleep or awake.

This is an exerpt from guinealynx:
"Guinea pigs normally keep their eyes open all the time, even when sleeping. A very few may sleep with their eyes fully closed."

Addition:
Jayne S is right too, my friends guinea pig was very young when she got her so she often fell asleep and she slept with her eyes closed.

Addition:
The picture Nikki showed is soo cute. My guinea pigs often relax and do that too, when they are in my arms.

It truly relies upon on the Guinea Pig. Guinea Pigs do no longer truly sleep, they only take short naps then they are up back; eating and pooping. My 6 Guinea Pigs have continuously slept with their eyes open, its organic and organic instinct as a results of certainty they are prey animals. in the event that they do close their eyes its for extraordinarily short instructions of time, yet its uncommon for them to close their eyes voluntarily; additionally they do no longer blink.

I've seen my piggies sleep with their eyes open on occasion, but not ALL of the time. It appears that they're in a trance-like state. They "look" awake, but they're not. If you try to pet them while they're like this, it'll scare the bejeebers out of them! Sometimes they sleep with their eyes closed, so I don't think this is the way they ALL sleep ALL of the time.

It doesn't look creepy at all! It looks like they're "lost in thought". My pigs must be very deep thinkers.....

Actually they don't really go to sleep much. Maybe 5 minutes at a time and you will hardly ever see it. Other times when they are resting, their eyes are open. It kind of serves the same purpose as sleep, but they can react instantly if anything happens. Rabbits do the same thing. They just look like they are sitting there resting, nothing special.

Guinea pigs don't sleep with their eyes open, they sleep with them closed... and it wouldn't be creepy it would only look like they were awake.

It seems like mine are up all the time. I always hear them. Maybe they just sleep while I'm not in my room.
