$2000.00 can be a large chunk of change. When my fiance proposed, I realized how much he paid (enough for a down payment on a nice home)...and I begged him to take it back. I'm the practical one. He didn't let me because he wanted me to have the biggest and best ring that he could buy, and now a few months later, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It is a piece of jewelry that I will wear every single day for the rest of my life. I'm so glad that he did a wonderful job.

Hey dude,
To answer your question:
1. $2000 more is a lot of money. For .26 of a carat more (let those teeny tiny numbers sink in!) you will not likely notice much of a difference in color and size. Put that money towards buying a house or paying off some credit card debt. A one carat diamond is a substantial rock.
2. Times have changed and the pressure to "prove your worth" by spending several month's salary on an engagement ring has been relaxed. What is important is that you spend enough to show her how much she means to you. And it sounds like you'd be doing that with one carat.
3. Check out GroomGroove.com. Diamonds aside, it's got a whole lot of information from rings, to popping the question, to wedding speeches and more. And best of all, it's for men. As a starter, consider reading "Gut Check: Are you sure you are ready to get married?" The questions presented in that article are much more important than carats, color or cut and you should think about your answers and your fiancee-to-be's!

You spent a nice chunk o'change on a 1 carat ring. I would not recommend spending another $2,000 on just .26 carats unless you are quite wealthy and really want to do it. I think any reasonable woman would be happy with a nice 1 carat ring and there are so many better uses for $2,000. I'd recommending putting that $2000 toward a downpayment on a house or in an I.R.A.

If you are made of money do whatever you want. If not I would seriously advise against doing something that will make you two start your lives together in debt. Spend what you can afford. Most women would rather have a down payment on a house instead of a bigger diamond. A 1 carat is plenty sufficient for anyone. I've actually talked to some girls who think that that's too big. If you start off with something so big then what are you going to do for anniversaries in the future?

I think you may be better off going smaller and getting better quality.
Something like SI1 clarity, G-H color, and only 0.75 carats. I1 has visual imperfections and getting a larger diamond will not make it better.
Also look online to see if you are getting a good price. Check out www.bluenile.com, I think SI2 is the worst clarity they carry.

Get the upgraded ring
The color G is much better than a color K and 1.26 is better than 1 ct.

The best way to make sure you have the perfect ring is to take her shopping and ask her what she prefers (within your budget limitations, of course).
Now, yes . . . that may not be the most romantic way to do it.
But . . . this is a ring she will be wearing for a very long, long time. To my way of thinking, it should be a ring that she loves.
Good luck to you.

If you can afford it and not go into debt go ahead and upgrade.
If money is tight right now, go for the 1 carat.

Do you have the cash to pay for either ring?
If you are borrowing to buy either, you are starting your impending union on the wrong foot.
If you have the money without debt, go for the good one, because if you buy the inferior one, you will always know.

Yes, save your money for the wedding. She will definitely love the ring that you give her.
