Darkness was not created. It is simply the absence of light. Cold was not created as well, just the absence of heat. Now for the good one: evil was not created either, it is simply the absence of good.

I am the LORD, and there is no other, 7The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these. 8"Drip down, O heavens, from above, And let the clouds pour down righteousness; Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit, And righteousness spring up with it. I, the LORD, have created it.…

What you first stated as Genesis 1 that, "God created the heavens and the Earth." In Genesis 2, the result was an, "earth without form, and void and darkness was on the face of the deep."

From these two first verses, I understand it to mean that the result of God creating the heavens and earth caused there to be darkness because it was void of light. As it says in Genesis 2, that the earth was void.

Wrong, look at verse 1 more carefully, he created all of the heavens, space, time, matter, and the earth. Darkness was part of the heavens(space) creation. However it was not called darkness, because it is impossible to have darkness without light, since darkness is the absence of light. So darkness really came into being from the creation of light. God bless.

What are you, a commie atheist? Darkness was created by God's big sister, Molly, who later married Moby Dick, who swallowed Daniel who shot his slingshot at the lion who ate the talking snake whose name was the same as the talking donkey's, but in French. The question is, which came first, the darkness or the light? Liberals say light, but knowing right-wing wacko Fundies swear up and down that it was darkness because it says so in the Bible and they can prove it. Then a ghost that was holy did the nasty with a teenage Jewish girl named Mary (in English, which God created during a break from creating the trillion galaxies), and she had Jesus, who got everybody really ticked off because his skin was dark, his hair was dark, his mug was kind of like Louis Armstrong's. Her boyfriend Joseph was really angry because, though he wasn't a racist, he said, he hated black people. That's how Earth was created, on a rainy day in mid-April 6000 years ago.

The word create is not used here. Another scripture shows that God forms or shapes light, but that he created darkness.

In this manner darkness is shown to be an artificial thing while light perhaps because of being part of God's essence is shaped rather than created.

This shaping is most likely what we refer to when we say that the electromagnetic radiation has so and so wavelength.

Isaiah 45:7 Forming light and creating darkness, Making prosperity, and creating misfortune,—I—Yahweh, who doeth all these. (Rotherham)

God created both the light and the darkness. The verse for that is in Isaiah. I can't remember the verse off the top of my head.

Another train of thought is from the Kabbalists. They believe that G-d is beyond all knowing. And when light was created it was the first time that G-d himself could be know. It was the first emanation of G-d. This light was the first physical feature - the first thing that could be experienced.

When darkness is used before creation of light, it is referring to how unknowable G-d really is. It is believed that even the first spark of creation, even though it was so bright, could no penetrate the deep eternity and holiness and power that is G-d.

Before the light, there was G-d - darkness, unknown. We cannot see what is contained in the dark, we cannot know it without light. G-d provided that light to knowing him.

The author of Genesis created it. It says there was darkness in the beginning because it was obviously assumed that because there was no light source, there had to be a darkness. I don't understand how it couldn't have just been said that there was nothing since god was supposed to have created something from nothing. Darkness is something.

Darkness is the absence of light. As nothing is the absence of existance . .. before creation was nothing . .. GOD then gave existance to all things by creating them . . . there wasn't light so there was the empty nothingness of darkness . .. void . .. then GOD made the LIGHT and it was . ..

It is interesting to note that GOD created by "speaking" these things into existance and JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD made flesh . ..

And that JESUS is the LIGHT OF THE WORLD . .. that dispelled the darkness . ..

-LOVE your neighbor as yourself . ..
Amen

God created both of them:

الْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ الظُّلُمَاتِ وَالنُّورَ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِرَبِّهِم يَعْدِلُونَ

Praise be Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the DARKNESS and the LIGHT. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal, with their Guardian-Lord.
