My employer is offering dental insurance for $30 a month. It seems like a waste of money since I only go to the dentist once a year and the cleaning is only a hundred dollars or so. My mom thinks that I should get it. What do you think?

I definitely agree with the first poster with regards to health emergencies (and I am definitely getting health insurance for that reason), but what is the liklihood of a dental emergency?

Find out what it covers and then have your dentist office give you the non insurance costs of what is covered. (that you would actually use) just crunching the numbers should give you the best answer
Plus reg health insurance usually covers emergency mouth stuff and reg dental insurance doesn't cover ...let's call it the "aftermath" of a dental emergency
I have dental insurance that is for x-rays and cleanings and if my employer ever dropped that coverage I wouldn't be missing much.

What is the likelihood of a dental emergency? That is really impossible to say. For instance, I have never had a filling. I have flossed my teeth every night since I was about 8 years old. I have never had an emergency and I am 43. However, most people will have an emergency of some kind. And I would say that MOST people will have multiple emergencies. It all depends on your genetics, your teeth, you bacterial count, your diet, and how often and how well you brush and floss.
So you can see, this is not an easy question to answer. However, like all insurances, it is better to have it in case you need it, even if you never use it.

Dental insurance is not just for emergencies. I can tell you from experience that teeth CAN deteriorate QUICKLY over any number of reasons, including stress. Even excellent dental hygiene might not be enough. If this happens, you're stuck with the bill(s), and many dental procedures require more than one visit.
EVEN IF you never need to use any dental services, (i.e., "wasted" all that money) you atleast have some peace of mind knowing that if you, for example, need a root canal, you wont be stuck with an $800 (or more) bill.
You're Mom's right.

Its always good to have insurance just in case of an emergency.
