I think you may have put your Explorer into 4X4 low. To shift out of 4X4 low, start the vehicle, apply the brake and keep your foot on the brake, make sure you are not moving. Shift the transmission into neutral. Then shift the transfer case to 2 wheel drive. The generic electronic control module (GEM) that operates the transfer case must see that the brake is applied, the transmission is in neutral, and that the vehicle is not moving before it will allow the vehicle to be put into or out of 4X4 low. If after following this procedure, your Explorer does not come out of 4X4, you will need a professional technician to look at your vehicle. If you have your owner's manual, this procedure, along with the proper time to use the 4X4 features of your vehicle will be explained in the section on 4X4 operation.

If you are in 4 wheel low like suggested in others posts you will need to follow their steps but with an extra one in the middle. Before it will go into 2 wheel drive you will need to select 4 x hi then 2 wheel hi. Hope this helps.

Put the gear selector in Neutral. Step on the brake while doing this. And move the selector for your 4wheel drive back to 2 wheel hi. Then put it in drive and slowly let the truck go forward till you hear the transfer case disengage and it should be in 2 wheel hi after you hear that.

is it a fulltime 4 wheel drive?
in 96 the 5.0 explorers were fulltime
if its not fulltime there is either a shifter on the floor or a rotary switch on the dash.

Is it in 4WD Hi or Lo? If its in hi, turn the knob back to 2WD. If its in low you have to place the transmission in neutral before shifting back to 2WD.
