What about 2 weeks prior to date of arrival?

Mine has 2 weeks for no good reason. Not very high class and highly sought after. Strange.

One day or 24 hours notice is the most common. And the place I stay at the most frequent is actually by noon of the date of arrival.

But yeah, you do have to keep your eye on the fine print. I have also seen longer ones. One strict policy is for some really cheap deals I have booked online. They would take the payment from the credit card immediately and no cancellation available to you.

I think what is fair is the approximate time the hotel needs to rebook the room. If they rebook it, then there shouldn't be a charge to you. But doesn't sound like this place has very good customer service. Unless it is a booking agency and not really the hotel? And like I said, if you got an excellent deal on it.

Edit: Your question reminded me I needed to take a break from Answers and book for next month in that hotel I mentioned. Their cancellation policy is 4PM on arrival day. This is not a mistake.

Many of the fancier (4-5 star) hotels want at least a 3-day notice or more. 2 weeks sounds excessive unless it's a very popular and high-class hotel that tends to remain booked full. The rest typically have 24-hour notice. However, Marriott hotels are the best if you typically have last minute changes or know it's a possibility that change will occur. Marriotts will allow you to cancel up to 6pm the day of arrival.

24 hours is the general rule of thumb. There are many hotels that allow you cancel by 6 pm of the same day without getting charged for it.
