My assistant manager/step-sister always has an attitude. She claims that nothing is wrong and if anything I am annoying her by asking all of the time. We work in a retail store and when someone asks for help she always seems bothered or annoyed. This is obviously not good for business and it brings everyone down. Because she is family it is difficult to approach without leading to an argument. how do I tell her to shap up before I let her go?

It will be tough since she is so closely related to you, but if you are her manager, you must separate family member from employee. Set up a time to meet together at work in private and discuss the situation. Explain that as a manager you cannot compromise your job and your business due to an employees behavior, no matter who it is, family or not. In a managerial position, it is your job to represent your store/company/etc. and if she is projecting a negative vibe, then your store will be getting that same negative vibe and that of course will bring down your customers and other employees. Happy customers are paying customers, so don't keep negativity around!
Have gentle, but serious chat with her, it's much better than losing sales, customers, and employees -- and better than hurting her feelings much worse by firing her. Let her know that when she's at work, the customers needs come before hers, not matter how petty the need may seem; and furthermore, she must show interest in the customers needs and help them to the best of her abilities. And stress the importance of being kind and helpful towards the employees below her. The lower level employees work the most with the customer, so if the employees aren't able to get help from a manager, they won't be able to help the customer as well. Not to mention that negativity is contagious, and happier managers/assistant manager make happier customers.
So pleeease have a talk with her, I'm sure she doesn't want to lose her job over something that could be fixed with a little confronatation.
Good Luck!

I would tell her that she is getting complaints from the customers even if one hasn't actually said anything yet. She is bad for business and you need to protect everyone's jobs. I wouldn't shop there if someone was rude to me or I would let the owner know about it.

Sounds like this is just a trait in her personality which she doesn't realise as she int annoyed, she just seems it. Sounds like retail isn't a great line of work for her, put it to her like that.

Just that..treast her like any other employee. No special treatment. You did her a favor and let her work there. What would you do to anyother employee acting this way?
Talk to her and tell her to shape up or ship out.

I wonder if you should video tape her. I was told that I had an unapproachable attitude and had no idea what they meant until I saw myself on a tape they made of all of us. Perhaps she, too, in unaware of how she is perceived.
