So far out of the first 8 answers, I like Balaam's best.
Before Christians become too "****-sure' please study "Tithing - Before The LaW was given; During The Law Dispensation and After The Law.
If you have honestly study "tithing" in that context and still believes that "Tithing is for the New Testament Church" I will eat the Bible literaly ! This is not to mock Christians but to implore you to search the Scripture for yourself with the Holy Spirit as your Teacher and not men's tradition ! OK?

Believe me, a proper understanding of "Tithing" will set people free from a wrong, religious mind-set so that they can experience the reality of New Covenant Life In Christ !
You'll discovers and recovers a glorious spiritual inheritance that Christians have been defrauded of, exposing worng doctrines that negate CHRIST'S FININSHED WORK ON THE CROSS!
You will also discover about living like a rigtheous, new-creation son of God, born again through spiritual union with Jesus Christ by His Resurrection from the dead.
"TITHING" is just the tip of the iceberge of carnal mentalities that dominate most of Christianity !
"Awake 'O' spiritual Israel ! Your Light is comes !

New Covenant Giving has a higher financial commitment than the tithe, but it's based on a completely different paradigm.
Tithing is never mentioned as an instruction to New Covenant believers-not as a law, a principle or a voluntary practice !
The apostles exhorted believers to give financially, but it has nothing to do with tithing.
When they instructed believers to assist the poor, the widows, and the fatherless and to support the ministers of the gospel, they NEVER ! quoted scriptures about tithing !
If you can find it in the N.T. I'll eat my Bible I promise!
Paul wrote more on the subject of financial giving than the other writers of N.T. epistles. When he instructed believers about their obligations to give financially he quoted O.T. scriptures to support his teaching, but not the ones about thithing !
There is no basis tosay the N.T church considered thithing to be the pattern for financial stewardship !
There is no scriptual evidence to say the apostles ..to be con'td

..apostles considered tithing to be an eternal principle for all ages or the key to financial blessing for Christians.
In 1 Corinthian 9, Paul presents an extensive teaching on why ministers of the gospel have a right to be supported financially and why the body of Christ is obligated to do so. He appeals to several theological arguments to prove what he is teaching. This would be the perfect opportunity for him to quote a verse on tithing as the scriptural authority for what he is saying BUT HE DOESN"T !
In 1 Cor. 9:7 he begins his instruction by appealing to common sense.
In verse nine he refers to the Law of Moses which says, in Deut.25:4
In Vs. 13 , Paul refers to the O.T. principle that those who serve in the temple and at the altar are ordained to partake of those things that are brought as sacrifices and offerings.
In vs 14 he quotes the words of Jesus:
"Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel." Matt.10"10;Lk10:7

In 1 Tim 5:17-18, Paul teaches believers to support the minister of the gospel. He again quotes Deut.25:4 and the words of Jesus but he says nothing about tithing !
Jesus also said many things on the subject of giving that were not based on tithing.
A thorough study of all the N.T. exhortations that apply to financial giving reveals a difference perspective than what is often preached today.
Jesus himself is the highest example of the motivation and purpose of all giving. He Gave because He loved and He gave to bless!
So should we !
The church does not need tithing to finance the work of God on earth. New Covenant giving is based on a better process. The born-again Christian is one with Christ and owned by Him. His new nature is to live for Christ with all of his heart, mind, soul, strength, and MONEY !
Examine the scriptural exhortations and perspectives related to giving in the N.T. and not be preoccupied with using Old Covenant Principle of tithing to motivate people please!

Yes you are quite right. I agree with your general view about tithing. It is often used manipulatively to make people feel guilty and stump up cash. I give my money to those Protestant organisation I feel are doing worthwhile work, such as missionary groups working abroad in areas where persecution is rife and need is great; also Mission Aviation in Africa; and others.

Some people think that tithing was limited to the Jews:
Yet, we find Abraham paying tithe to Melchizedek, the religious order of that day. Then Jacob paid tithes although it does not name the church.
The N.T. asks you to give as God has prospered, and the New Earth says all nations will pay their tithes for eternity.
I feel ten-percent is a archaic goal. I give my whole life to Him. All that I buy, except for personal needs, is used in His service. I've promised Him that He can have my entire life. I'll sell everything if He needs it; In fact, we just sacrificially donated $1000 to help pay for a lot to build a church on. My house (www.revelado.org/rancho.htm) is not finished because we spent the construction money for other land to build a church on.
My time belongs to the Lord. Having done volunteer missionary work for a decade, He blessed me with an injury that got me retired early, so my wife and I hold Bible seminars FREE to the public, and without pay (www.revelado.org/talamanca.htm).
So, if you Love the Lord and His self-sacrificing Spirit dwells withing you, then there is not enough you can do for Him.
Blessings and AGAPE, Balaam

Most christian traditions are not from the Bible. Also Jesus never said that we, gentiles, could have the old testament. That is a jewish book which was essentially stolen. And a lot of christian misunderstanding is caused by Saul, alias Paul, the false Apostle. Jesus said there would false prophets, and he was the first one. All we have is the Gospels. And if you just read them, without anyone else's interpretation, you will see the hypocrisy of the church.

Not a Christian, but tithing IS mentioned in the Bible, it was practised well into the time of Jesus. I'm not sure if or when it was abolished.

You are right.
About the only things brought over from the old law to Christ's Law, are in the verse below
Act 15:20 but that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.

Christ's work is not finished on the Cross, it just begins.
Please read my response to your restatement of this question.
Please follow the link and prayerfully and humbly study this paper on tithing. I have not read it in it's entirety yet, but agreed with the conclusions at the end of the last chapter.

............................................................................................And do you prefer salt with that Bible?
There are many falsehoods taught by traditional churchianity, tithing is not one of them. The only falsehood in their teaching about tithing is that they lay claim to the tithes.
