Yes, I think it is the same thing...but some people need to believe in God as a sense of security. Some of us have found this security within ourselves and the people around us, but for most that believe in God it is a fear that they won't be able to make it without him. (just a thought..)

I think part of the problem is that you've had people tell you that, "if you just believe, he'll appear to you, " or, "if you have faith, you'll see."
Believing that there's a God, that he's not a man-made concept like witches, the boogie man, or big bird, requires knowledge and action.
You just can't believe or just have faith. You're right, anyone can believe in anything that way.
To have true knowledge, you have to search it out in your mind if the existence of God is possible. You would then have to practice some kind of action in which you would get a tangible result from what you believe in.
Otherwise, if you just believe or pretend to believe, you can believe and have any imaginary anything that you want.
I mean, if you believe in the boogie man, you'd look under the bed or in the closet to see if he was true, right?
Or...you'd go looking for witches to see if they were real, or maybe you'd switch on the television to see if you could get a glimpse of big bird on Sesame Street that way.
You KNOW where to look, you know what action you have to take to find what you need to believe in...and when you find it, that's your result.
It's difficult to consider that what you have to do to search for God is praying and actually reading scripture, going to church...yadda yadda yadda, to find the existence of God. It's not as easy as looking for the boogie man, or witches or big birds I'm afraid.
Good luck, though. I hope you have the courage to find what you're looking for in all sincerity.

If god doesn't exist he'd be on the same level as any other mythical creature.
But, if god exists, then by his nature (you know, the creator of the universe with all his omi-properties), he'd be necessary to the existence of everything.
I don't believe he exists, but my belief doesn't affect god's actual existence. So, I don't know if it's the same as believing in the boogie man. It might. But I'm not completely convinced. It could be the opposite. It could be like disbelieving one's own existence.

Sadly, I see these questions often. And most who post them think they are clever for thinking them up. While debasing those who believe differently then them.
Having faith in G-d and pretending that G-d exists are two very different concepts. Faith is actually knowing G-d. Pretending is knowing that what you are imagining really isn't true but you would like to think so anyway.
At this point in time we can prove that there are no monsters hiding under the bed by merely looking. G-d isn't so easy to prove or disprove. Yet the proof is there for those who really want to know G-d. It is not wishful thinking turned into bent reality for followers. It is actually knowing G-d and being filled with the Divine.
The even more unfortunate thing is that even if I could give you a list of proofs that G-d undeniably exists you still wouldn't believe. Because you have already cast the possibility from your mind.

I was speaking with the wood sprites in my back yard, and we agree.
Those things, like the boogie-man, witches, god/gods, they don't exist.

Witches and Boogie Men don't make Universes that people can live in, and they are not Super Intelligent. Witches and Boogie Men might have it over on you in the knowledge department. Yes, they know, all too well.

Theres always a reason to have faith. We had faith in Santa Clause and sure enough he appeared every Christmas! Later we found out its our parents and the magic vanished. We discovered there werent actually mosters in the closet, etc. Fake beliefs have a way of expiring.
But faith in God is different. You dont have to pretend to start seeing the results of prayer and the Holy Spirit. And the great thing is theres no parents running it, no man behind the curtain. Only God can promise to do the things he sets out to do and we get to be a part of that.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. -John 6:44

No, it is not the same. If you actually take some time and look outside, at all that God has made....at the different people, it's amazing. THere is a good, and one who loves you so much....it hurts Him that you will deny Him. Everyone was born with a knowing in their heart that there is a God. Boogie man is someone people made up, someone who scares people and all. While God is just .....undescribably amazing. :)
