I was recently prescribed Wellbutrin XL. I am a social drinker. I usually drink every weekend 5-6 drinks (usually beer). I'm scared of the interaction between the two. I have never had a sezier before. Could I still have one? Would I get really sick if I drank this much while taking this medication? Would it just make me sleepy? I'm scared.

hard to say. I used to take wellbutrin XL when I was younger (I'm 31 now and off wellbutrin)

I drank the equivalent at the time and never had a problem when mixing, (it is not recommended) but I did take an few extra wellbutrin once and fell unconscious and suffered a concussion. I was very miserable and in nasty pain all over for about a week after wards.

I never took wellbutrin again.

Patients should be told that the excessive use or abrupt discontinuation of alcohol or sedatives (including benzodiazepines) may alter the seizure threshold. Some patients have reported lower alcohol tolerance during treatment with WELLBUTRIN XL. Patients should be advised that the consumption of alcohol should be minimized or avoided.

Do not drink while taking buproprion (wellbutrin). The fate (aka the elimination or buproprion occurs mostly in the kidneys. Wellbutrin is not a very effective antidepressant. Nonetheless, to consume alcohol concurrently with wellbutrin therapy is hard on some of your organ, and could lessen the effects of the Rx drug. Alcohol will suppress the release of seretonin and that is contraindicated for your condition.

Generally you don't want to take any alcohol if you can avoid it. Your question definately depends on the drink you are consuming due to variations in the alcohol content. 1 or 2 cups of wine or beers will probably not do harm ONCE in a while. However the potential for a negative reaction is possible with One drink, so you are essentially taking your life into your own hands. Sleepiness is probably the most common adverse effect you'll have, but respiratory depression is also a possiblity. Please use medication with caution.

It will definitely change the way the alcohol affects you. I drink wine with wellbutrin & find that it affects memory and makes me feel different than when I did not take it. It's probably not a good idea.

You don't drink with Wellbutrin. Plus 5-6 drinks every weekend is not social drinking in my estimation.

If the drug/your doctor says to not drink alcohol with it, DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WITH IT.

Every person is different. Could you? Maybe. Some can. But you might be the one to have a bad reaction. I would err on the side of safety.
