I can naturally read languages and listen in on conversations very naturally, but when it comes to actually speaking or writing the language I have the most difficult of times. I can read French, Spanish, German (which I think is an easy language), and even a little Japanese with just a few months lessons, but can speak just a few basic sentences.

Like me, you may have trouble recalling individual words reliably as quickly as needed for speech. It may be from not wanting to make a mistake and flub what you are saying especially if you value being known for accuracy. Probably the cure is getting in to a conversational practice group.

There are a lots of us with the same problem. You just need more practise in the languages you know. Try to speak more with a native speaker of those languages, if you can find one. Or try to see films in those languages with English subtitles, so that you can hear the language spoken. There are also language DVDs, listening to such a DVD can help you a lot. Good luck! You obviously have talents for languages.

Sir, I have studied 5 different languages in colleges. I have 3 other college friends that speak French, Spanish, and German. I have to speak with them in their native languages. I teach English as a second language to my college friends.

I can read and write languages better than I can speak and understand them.I'm fluent in Welsh and English and have learnt to get by in French and Portuguese. The problem I find is that native speakers talk very quickly and my brain has a job catching up. When they speak more slowly I can manage it.

It is because you did not have practice in these languages.
To actually start speaking these languages, you have to read, read, read, until all the patterns and template with sink in, and settle down, and you actually will start thinking in these languages...after that you will have to speak better, if in the country where everyone speaks that language.
Only practice makes it perfect.
Genius without hard work is useless...

Absolutely! Lots of people I know (including myself) have this small problem. I can understand many languages perfectly...but speaking them is another story. It's okay, you'll get it eventually. Just practice, practice (and did I mention practice?) Good luck!
