I'm moving one bedroom from CA to NY. This room only includes a desk, chair, computer and clothing (no other pieces of furniture). I've looked at renting a cube and it's nearly $1,500.00. Any other ideas?

Most anything you can pack in a box you can ship for less than $50 dollars per box through UPS. However, the pricing calculations are complicated. They ask for the addresses as well as measure the dimensions of the box. There is a minimum charge per box so you might as well get the biggest box that you can carry that they allow. Up to $100 insurance is included but you can buy more if is really valuable. A tracking # is included unlike shipping via the US postal service.
Unless you are very attached to your bigger items this has been the least expensive and worry free method I have found. Often you can replace an item for not much more than it would cost to move it. Things like the desk, chair, and computer usually don't have sentimental value so (to me) are easily replaced. Sell or donate what you can then look forward to buying new stuff in New York! Or even getting things for free from organizations ....see below.
If you plan on flying find an airline that lets you check 3 bags instead of 2 and put your heavy items in those instead of clothes.
If driving use your auto for the things you can't ship.
Best of luck!

Shipping a car will be expensive. Also you won't be able to bring much with on your plane (guess you do have a few box of stuff that you need to carry). You will need to ship them too, plus the plan ticket, It won't be cheap. Driving from VT to CA will be around 3000 miles. It is going to take a few days. Are you guys in a rush? If not it would be a nice road trip. The fuel cost won't be a lot more than the plane ticket. You can live in one of those motel that cost you like 40 bucks a night. And you save the money from shipping those boxes.

The cheapest and easiest is to move things yourself. Sounds as though a pickup or van would haul all your things.
