Many people, claiming to be Christian, quote from the old testament - something I've never understood :|
Every so often one of them tries to convert me...
I refuse, citing a passage from Leviticus (21:20 methinks, but I'm probably wrong) that clearly says anyone with a blemish in their eye is not allowed to approach/worship at the alter of god
now... I'm as blind as a bat without my glasses (bit of a blemish), but, if evangelicals take the bible as literal truth, why do they keep trying to convert me?
My glasses are pretty bloody big, btw ;)

Cheers for all the replies
I was amazed at the response :D
Haven't been here for quite a while: one of the reasons is the lack of ability to debate,
but thanks again

Leviticus 20;21 actually refers to not sleeping with your brothers wife. It describes the act as "unclean".
I don't know where the passage is that you're referring to but the term "blemish" is used in the same way that "unclean" in the mentioned passage.
It is not a literal but a metaphorical expression of the word. It means if your "sight" or vision is not true you are not in a state to worship. It also refers to the sick, the lame and the afflicted.
Leviticus 21. 17: 22. "He shall eat the bread of his God" It just says that they should not mix in the temple, for they don't need to go there to be blessed by Him.
Like a lot of the laws in the Torah they were born out of practicality.
So you musn't sleep with your brothers partner and you don't have to attend service to recieve God's blessing when you're sick.
Sounds almost sensible to me.

The Old Testament is a way of learning of God's Word. It is a history of the chosen people of God. We can use its writings and examples to show us how to live.
No Christian can convert another person. That is what the Holy Spirit does and the person has to make a choice to become a follower of Christ. No one can be FORCED to believe.
Leviticus 21:20 actually says: or a hunchback or a dwarf, or {one who has} a defect in his eye or eczema or scabs or crushed testicles. This is only a part of the whole passage Lev 21: 16 - 23, which talks about those who are not permitted to offer food to God as a sacrifice. (However, the Old Testament believers were under THE LAW. We, since the death and resurrection of Christ, are under GRACE, not the Law.)
What has that to do with someone explaining Christ's offer of salvation to you?
Jesus said, in Matthew 28:19,to go and make disciples of the WHOLE WORLD. That means YOU, too. So, a Christian's job is to spread the offer that Christ has given for salvation to everyone. We are REQUIRED by Christ Jesus to do that. Some of us are not as diligent in following that order, unfortunately.
The choice to accept the offer of salvation or refuse it is up to you. You cannot be forced to accept it.

Yes, that was old testament, we live by the new testament, not to say the old is done away with, Jesus came to fulfill it, all the prophets wrote about him, Jesus so he fulfilled the words
now the new is a better and a living way, you body does not matter, there is no blemish in the spirit, that is what God looks at the heart, spirit, intents of you

Everyone, including you can be a Christian. Those trying to convert you with The Old Testament have forgotten about The New Covenant Jesus died to establish. Seek Jesus out for yourself--I did in a place of complete solitude so no one would bother me and I asked for the real Jesus to please standup so to speak and now I am happier then I have ever been. Remember there is Satan too who will try to get you to think you have made the worst mistake ever by calling on Jesus as your Saviour.

Jesus fulfilled the law of the OT with His birth-death-resurrection. As long as you believe in Him , blemishes don't matter. When we are resurrected our resurrected bodies will be perfect like Christ so you won't need your glasses to see. You will have 20/20 vision.

yeah that's rubbish, anyone can worship God, you don't even need an altar now, since the death of Jesus brought us the right to enter the most holy place as holy people through christ. (I have a cataract in my eye and God speaks to me, you'll have to come up with a better excuse)

You can be whatever you want to be. What you are quoting was written in the days of ignorance of medical problems. It is also said that if someone has a red birthmark on their face they are evil. This was just pure ignorance, nothing more nothing less.
It also says in the bible that men should not lay with men. So is half the world going to go to hell ???????

Well, you don't have to go up to the alter in the first place lol...I don't have good vision, and .....well I don't go to church, but I used to.
Maybe if you would accept Jesus into your heart BAM!!!! It's a miracle, you can see clearly without your glasses.....
lol, who knows? Might as will give it a shot, what do you have to lose?

No, you can't be a Christian unless God quickens you to life.
You can't have true faith unless God gives you revelation, unless He gives it to you.
He does promise that, All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
But it is difficult to see how you will seek Him and go to Him with such short sighted, myopic views that you have.
