How do you say Modem in spanish?

My mom and my friend Fernando tell me that it is "el modem", which makes enough sense. But my textbook says another term for a moden is "el fax". I asked them about this, and they say this isn't true. Is there any country where they call the modem "el fax" or is this just wrong? Also, there was a question in my book asking, "How do you send a fax?" And we were supposed to choose from a list of computer related electronics/devices, and she said the answer was "el fax/el modem." I mean, I'm pretty sure there is a way you can send a fax through your computer, but she's not exactly computer smart (She's running Windows 95 still) so it's not like she would know that. What's the deal?!

My book's copyright is 2007, so it's not outdated. (Although some of the terms are)

I'm asking if it's true if people call it "el fax" in any country. I know a name for it is "el modem".

The right word is "módem", already accepted by the Royal Academy (with an accent on the ó)

"fax" is the same as English: "fax".

Two different things.

And "fax módem" is also different.

no Modem is modem in spanish i mean it doesn't sound like it in english it said the spanish way, and the fax is the fax, same thing. NO i never heard anyone said to the modem "el fax". i think that textbook was wrong.

I'm mexican and I'm sure it's just MODEM there is no other word for it. We say "el modem" and a fax is el fax. OMG I can't believe how many people don't read the question.

Actually modem is the right way pero en puerto rico dicemos modemo o modema. And el fax is not a word its like spanglish or something.

Amiga, ambas respuestas arriba son correctas. Es el aparato mediante el cual tu computadora se conecta al Internet por medio de las líneas telefónicas. Y no, no tiene nada que ver con el monitor, el cual es la pantalla a través de la cual ves las imágenes y contenido de Internet. Trata de no buscar traducciones del inglés al español, porque la mayoría de veces son sumamente confusas. Es mejor que busques en diccionarios inglés-inglés, así obtienes la mejor definición, y además practicas tu inglés. ;)
