candy striper at a local hospital
food pantry/shelter
nursing home
read to kids at a local library
read books on tape for the blind (you can do this from home)
Coach a youth sports team or help with the organizing
Look around your neighborhood and you can find a volunteer opportunity practically anywhere if you are creative!
Good question and good luck!

Look around you. See anything that solicits a tear from your eyes or make your heart grieve? That's where your heart is. Identify the problem and see how you can be part of the solution. Then you take it from there. It's good to do community service when you really have passion for your objectives and compassion to those who will benefit. With that you can never go wrong. Praying for your endeavor, friend!
Tip: Resources (ideas, finances) come after commitment!

Long Island, NY: U.S.C.G (Aux) We are surrounded by the ocean, I saved a kid's life once on the water (Boating collision with a Jet Ski), The USCG was called, my little boat had the ability to get into the shallow area and retrieve the victim with out hitting bottom ( I know that Bay like the back of my hand), I then lead the crew through a little known short cut through the shallows to get to the ambulance, a few days later the USCG (Aux) contacted me, "Hey we could use a guy like you", now i'm on "Patrol" with other people who love the water, have boats, and are looking out for trouble on the water. We have plenty of water in NY.

Picking up trash is always a good thing. I'm sure it would be appreciated, too. I do that around my condo complex since we're on a busy street. There's never a shortage of trash to be picked up.
